About this role
Under direction of the Principal Investigator and the Director of non-cancer genetic counseling services (senior genetic counselor faculty), the Genetic Counselor will provide assistance with clinical research and genetic counseling activities for the ARIA (Aligning Research to Impact Autism) study. Duties include but aren’t limited to: implement research protocols and provide genetic counseling to study participants and their families, supervision of genetic counseling interns and genetics residents, lecture to professionals and public on genetic counseling, genetic diseases and genomic medicine as it relates to the study.
Salary Range: $56.99 - $75.24 Hourly
Required:
- Master of Science in Genetic Counseling conferred by a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling
- Certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling
- License of Genetic Counseling conferred by the State of California, Department of Public Health Second License / Certification
- Minimum 3-5 years of related experience or training
- Professional and current knowledge of the rapidly changing principles and practices of genetics
- Knowledge of the psychosocial aspects of genetic counseling, including risk perception, support mechanisms, defense and coping mechanisms, relationships and decision making processes.
- Ability to perform medical/research literature searches using worldwide databases, such as PUBMED, OMIM and GENEREVIEW
- Ability to read, understand and interpret research studies found in medical literature as related to clinical and research practices.
- Ability to demonstrate independent knowledge-seeking behavior.
- Ability to identify, evaluate and administer appropriate educational materials in order for patients to understand complex genetic information.
- Skills in interacting with individuals from a broad range of socioeconomic, educational, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, research personnel and investigators.
- Ability to effectively communicate solutions and clarifications of concerns, problems and quandaries to the respective parties involved.
- Knowledge of patient resource information (i.e. counseling, physician referrals, support groups, community resources)
- Effective organization skills
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Skills in operating a PC word processor and programs
