About this role
Director of Nursing (RN) | Home Care and Skilled Nursing | Honolulu
Kama'aina owned. Joint Commission accredited. Serving Oahu since 2010.
Own the clinical department. Build it stronger.
BrightStar Care of Honolulu is hiring a Director of Nursing to lead clinical care for our clients across Oahu, from personal care through skilled nursing. We are looking for a leader who earns the trust of a team, sets a high standard, and follows problems through until they are fixed.
What makes this role different
- Clinical authority. You can stop an unsafe task, restrict a staff member from a skill, require retraining, and hold a start of care until it is clinically ready. Operations does not override a clinical safety call.
- A working director, with a team. We are a small clinical department. You will do assessments, supervisory visits and skilled visits yourself when the team needs it. You also have nurses to assign work to, and your job is to build a department where your hands-on time is a decision and stops being the default.
- Support from the top. You report to the COO, with a weekly one-on-one, access to the numbers you are planning against, and timely decisions when you escalate.
- A seat on the leadership team. You help decide which clients we take, how we grow skilled services, and when the department adds to its team.
- Something to build. Families trust the care we give. Our systems for tracking visits and documentation need a leader to tighten them. We expect you to spend your first weeks listening, shadowing and learning how we work before you change anything, and we will show you exactly where we stand in the interview.
What you will own
- Assessments, plans of care, orders and supervisory visits: current, and scheduled two weeks ahead
- Changes in condition: urgent concerns acted on immediately, and every routine alert reviewed by a nurse within 24 hours
- Your nurses: clear expectations, coaching, checked work, and direct conversations when performance falls short
- Caregiver training and skills validation
- Incidents and complaints: investigated promptly and followed through until the fix holds
- Joint Commission readiness all year, including chart audits and quarterly quality meetings
- The clinical on-call roster
- Direct clinical work when it is needed
What success looks like
- Clinical requirements are completed accurately and on time
- Staff know what is expected and have the skills to do it
- Problems lead to a real fix and stop repeating
- Leadership has an accurate picture of clinical performance and risk
Who we are looking for
- Unrestricted Hawaii RN license and current BLS/CPR; BSN preferred
- Three or more years of nursing leadership, clinical management or supervisory experience, including direct accountability for staff performance
- Home health, home care or hospice experience preferred
- Experience with a Joint Commission or state survey
- Current clinical skills and willingness to work in the field alongside your team
- You earn trust before you use authority, and you treat caregivers, nurses and office staff with the same respect
- You have built or fixed a clinical system, and you can walk us through it
- You have dealt with a performance problem directly, and you can tell us how it ended
- Reliable transportation and auto insurance
The details
- $100,000 per year
- Full time, primarily on site with some flexibility
- Shared clinical on-call rotation for after-hours questions and escalations
- 100% employer-paid medical, prescription, dental and vision for eligible employees
- 401(k) match, paid time off, free continuing education
