Job Title: Mechanical Designer Job Description
The Mechanical Designer produces comprehensive technical project plans, specifications, drawings, and models that align with project requirements and client expectations. This role focuses on the design and coordination of a wide range of mechanical building systems, including industrial and domestic piping, plumbing, HVAC ducting, chillers, boilers, exhaust systems, motor control, process chemicals, fire protection, and other related systems. The Mechanical Designer applies established design techniques, collaborates closely with engineers and project teams, and ensures that all designs meet quality, performance, and code compliance standards.
Responsibilities
- Produce detailed technical project plans, specifications, drawings, and models that meet project requirements and client expectations.
- Lead the creation, refinement, and finalization of mechanical designs for industrial and domestic piping, plumbing, HVAC ducting, chillers, boilers, exhaust systems, motor control, process chemicals, fire protection, and other mechanical building systems.
- Design heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to maintain precise environmental conditions, including control of temperature, humidity, air filtration, and particle levels.
- Apply established design techniques and exercise sound judgment to adapt and modify design concepts while maintaining compliance with company and team CAD standards and quality control requirements.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers to perform load calculations, airflow balancing, and equipment sizing to achieve accurate temperature, humidity, and air quality control.
- Work closely with design teams, engineers, project managers, and stakeholders to address specific project objectives, complex design features, and unique challenges, proposing practical and effective solutions.
- Coordinate seamlessly with other design disciplines such as electrical, structural, process/chemical, and architectural to ensure complete and integrated design packages.
- Conduct field verifications and site assessments to identify existing conditions, verify design assumptions, resolve conflicts, and integrate solutions into design documents.
- Troubleshoot design issues that arise during construction and update design packages as necessary to support successful project delivery.
- Participate in design reviews and respond to requests for information (RFIs), providing clear and professional communication to internal teams and clients.
- Ensure that mechanical system designs adhere to applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE, IMC, NFPA, and local building codes.
- Use CAD and modeling tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, and PIPE-FLO (as applicable) to develop, coordinate, and document mechanical system designs.
Essential Skills
- GED or equivalent education.
- Minimum of 2 years of mechanical design experience.
- At least 1 year of experience working on industrial-type projects such as data centers, semiconductor facilities, tool install, healthcare, or oil and gas projects.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for mechanical design and drafting.
- Experience designing HVAC systems, chillers, boilers, pump hydraulics, exhaust, process chemicals, wastewater discharge, or similar mechanical building systems.
- Strong communication skills that enable effective collaboration with design teams, engineers, project managers, and stakeholders.
- Ability to interact clearly and professionally with clients during design reviews and when responding to RFIs.
