About this role
Selected student will work in the Sustainability & Energy Management Program at the Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), now part of the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). This on-site internship will support facilities and mission assets (e.g., clean rooms, research labs, utility systems). The project is to help the Wallops Energy Manager establish Smart Labs/clean rooms at WFF to reduce energy and water consumption. This includes activities such as calculate minimum air changes per hour (ACH) needed and compare to existing operations to identify energy conservation measures (ECMs), confirm the VAVs/AHUs that feed each lab, review design drawings, conduct lab walkthroughs to gather dimensions and operational requirements and lab conditions, determine type of contaminants and exhaust fixtures in each lab, learn to calculate energy savings using the Laboratory Fume Hood Energy Modeler, make recommendations and determine total costs. Deliverables include a completed Lab Ventilation Risk Assessment (LVRA) spreadsheet for each lab, final report with results and recommendations + savings estimates, presentation to lab owners, Facility Management Division (FMD), and Industrial Hygiene (IH).
Other projects include conducting facility surveys to assess building conditions and building re-tuning to improve energy efficiency of facilities.
Skills needed include analysis, math, writing, communication, and presentation skills.
Work performed will develop the student’s analytical capabilities, familiarity with daily engineering work, and communication skills through frequent interaction with NASA engineers, scientists and program managers. The data collected will provide crucial information enabling Wallops to meet NASA’s sustainability and energy goals.
