## Summary of Job Duties:
The Music Program, housed within the School of Literary and Performing Arts (SLPA) at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor/Director of Music Education, with a secondary emphasis in instrumental performance and/or conducting. This position will administer the music education program, which includes advising music education majors, serving as a liaison between the Music Program and School of Education, observing student teachers, and cultivating positive relationships with area K-12 music educators and school district staff. The successful candidate will participate in recruitment to promote the growth of the Music Program.
The School of Literary and Performing Arts is committed to providing a learning environment that prepares students to be artists, educators and innovators for the 21st century. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.
## Qualifications:
Required Education and Experience
- PhD or other terminal degree in music education or a related field; ABD considered;
- Experience teaching at the college or university level.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Experience administering university-level music education programs;
- 3 years of K-12 music education experience;
- Experience conducting an instrumental ensemble;
- Experience working with a diverse student population;
- Involvement in national, state, and regional professional music organizations.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach Foundations of Music Education, Teaching General Music; instrumental/ensemble classroom methods and instrumental/ensemble techniques as well as courses for the School of Literary & Performing Arts as needed;
- Supervise student teachers;
- Perform additional duties such as undergraduate conducting, applied instruction, general education, and ensemble direction based on expertise and workload;
- Serve as liaison between the School of Education and the School of Literary & Performing Arts;
- Maintain active membership in professional music organizations, such as the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA), the International Society for Music Education (ISME), or the College Music Society (CMS);
- Contribute to the discipline through guest clinics, workshops, conducting appearances, publications, presentations, or other scholarly or creative efforts;
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of music education licensure practice and student-teaching protocols;
- Ability to administer student teaching assignments and supervise in the field;
- Ability to teach introductory and advanced-level classes in Music;
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
- Demonstrated strong English verbal and written communication skills;
- Self-motivated, responsible, and able to work with minimal direct supervision;
- Computer literacy; familiarity with technology commonly used in music education settings;
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, collaboration, and collegiality;
- Ability to recruit for the Music program; develop and support student initiatives.
