JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, the Unit Coordinator provides administrative support on unit. Serves as a central contact for communication with but not limited to: internal department staff, MDs and their office staff, patients, hospital and organization staff. Directs telephone calls and is the distribution point for paperwork and test results.
This is a part-time evening position, and the work hours are 3:00PM - 11:00PM. The Part-time Unit Coordinator will work three 8-hour shifts per week as well as rotating weekends and holidays. Weekend shifts include Saturday and Sunday with every other weekend required.
The Unit Coordinator will demonstrate a good working knowledge of the department’s programs and services to provide accurate information to physicians and patients while adhering to all of Stamford Hospital’s policies and procedures and code of conduct.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greets individuals coming to the unit, provides directions and information and responds to needs and requests.
- Escorts and orients patients to their rooms. Ensures care environment is ready for patient as a member of the team. Sets up rooms for new patients as needed.
- Prepares, compiles and maintains the patient’s medical record on the nursing unit, including transcription of physicians’ orders and processing of ordered tests and procedures, from admission through discharge, utilizing current I.S. system.
- Manages the unit’s communication and tracking systems (e.g. phones, patient call bells, faxes, tele-tracking, responder) to facilitate effective communication among clinical team and patients.
- Responds to the patient call system, contacts nursing personnel as appropriate and
follows through with meeting patient needs.
- Support the clinical team with transportation of patients as needed.
- Participates in performance and support improvement and risk management activities.
- Audits and maintains unit supply inventory, places orders as needed and ensures closed-loop follow-up to verify all ordered supplies are received, and discrepancies are addressed.

- Creates an account for every infant in the Maven system, ensuring the accurate entry of all required information for newborn screening. Assists with follow-up actions for the State of Connecticut regarding positive newborn screening, missing pediatrician information, or incomplete newborn screening data.
- Prepares Newborn screening tests to be picked up by courier by 0930 daily.
- Troubleshoots and submits facilities work orders.
- Prints all discharge paperwork for mother and infant ensuring newborn footprint sheet has been pulled from the chart.
- Contacts OB offices for all missing prenatal records
- Provide coverage for the NICU UC during time off, including entering all NICU infants into Maven, and provide weekend support as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduate or equivalent.
Microsoft and Excel knowledge
BLS preferred but not required

MANUAL SKILLS:
Some daily tasks involve the application of manual skills requiring motor coordination and finger dexterity, including typing and operating machinery.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Some portions of daily assignments involve prolonged sitting, some transporting of materials, patients, or occasionally lifting or carrying heavy (over 30lbs) for intermittent periods throughout the day.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT :
Some portions of daily assignments involve exposure to dirt, noise, or include patient care responsibilities with exposure to human waste, body fluids and similar elements. May involve occupational risk such as cuts, needle punctures, exposure to toxic chemicals, injuries from falls or back injury sustained while assisting with moving, lifting or positioning patients, equipment or materials.
