Road & Rail Services is looking for skilled, hardworking individuals to join our maintenance team as a Railcar Mechanic . This position offers an opportunity to use your welding, fabrication, and mechanical repair abilities while helping maintain railroad equipment.

We are seeking candidates who enjoy solving mechanical problems, working with their hands, and taking pride in quality workmanship. Daily activities involve inspecting railcars, identifying defective components, and completing repairs using industrial tools and equipment.

You do not need previous railroad experience to be considered! We welcome applicants with backgrounds in industrial maintenance, heavy equipment repair, diesel mechanics, manufacturing, metal fabrication, and related mechanical trades.

Experience with stick welding, torch cutting, grinding, and mechanical troubleshooting is especially valuable.

Key Job Responsibilities

As a Railcar Mechanic, your daily assignments may include:

Evaluate railroad cars for structural damage, worn components, mechanical defects, and other maintenance concerns.

Perform authorized mechanical repairs following customer requirements and applicable railroad industry standards.

Complete stick welding and metal fabrication work to repair or restore equipment.

Operate oxygen-fuel cutting torches, grinders, and other metalworking equipment.

Remove, adjust, repair, and replace damaged railcar components.

Diagnose equipment problems and identify appropriate repair procedures.

Operate hand and power tools, including wrenches, sockets, pry bars, ratchets, and cutting equipment.

Examine completed repairs to verify workmanship and operational safety.

Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, and completed repairs.

Keep tools, materials, and assigned work areas organized and in safe operating condition.

Communicate repair concerns, equipment issues, and unsafe conditions to supervisors.

Follow all company, customer, and applicable safety procedures.

Qualifications & Preferred Experience

We are interested in applicants who demonstrate strong mechanical abilities and practical experience in skilled trades.

Relevant experience includes:

Stick welding and structural metal repair

Metal fabrication and torch cutting

Industrial equipment maintenance

Heavy machinery or diesel engine repair

Automotive or commercial trailer repair

Railroad equipment inspection and maintenance

Manufacturing or mechanical assembly work

Previous railcar repair experience is a plus but is not mandatory.

Successful candidates must be reliable, detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and capable of working both independently and as part of a maintenance crew.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Railcar maintenance is an active industrial occupation requiring physical endurance and attention to safety.

Applicants must be capable of:

Performing frequent bending, crouching, kneeling, lifting, reaching, and repetitive movements.

Climbing ladders and performing assigned duties at elevations exceeding 16 feet.

Applying approximately 90 pounds of pulling force and 68 pounds of pushing force when operating railcar end doors.

Walking and standing for extended periods on gravel, ballast, and uneven terrain.

Working near moving railroad equipment, machinery, and industrial tools.

Performing duties outdoors during changing weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain.

Properly using required personal protective equipment throughout the workday.

A valid driver's license may be necessary for assignments involving company-operated vehicles or mobile equipment.
