RN Coordinator – Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)
Position Summary
The RN Coordinator, Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), plays a vital role in coordinating comprehensive, patient-centered care for individuals receiving LVAD therapy throughout the continuum of care. This position supports the overall success and performance of the LVAD program through clinical coordination, patient and caregiver education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
Working closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing teams, and other healthcare professionals, the LVAD Coordinator promotes evidence-based practices, patient safety, and optimal clinical outcomes. This role also contributes to program development, accreditation readiness, staff education, performance improvement activities, and the maintenance of the INTERMACS registry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Care Coordination
- Coordinate and support comprehensive care for LVAD patients throughout the continuum of care, ensuring adherence to established LVAD program protocols and clinical standards.
- Collaborate with the VAD Coordinator APP, fellow VAD Coordinator RNs, and VAD Program Manager to achieve individualized patient care goals and organizational program objectives.
- Facilitate effective communication and coordination among physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Utilize strong clinical judgment, communication, and problem-solving skills to respond effectively to changing patient needs, unexpected challenges, and evolving departmental priorities.
- Participate in the LVAD emergency on-call rotation and support staffing coverage to ensure continuity of care and timely response to patient needs.
Patient, Caregiver, and Staff Education
- Provide education and support to LVAD patients and caregivers regarding device management, safety precautions, treatment expectations, and ongoing care requirements in accordance with established program protocols.
- Participate in the development and delivery of LVAD education and competency-based training for clinical staff.
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource to healthcare professionals, promoting LVAD awareness, clinical competency, and adherence to evidence-based practices.
- Support ongoing staff development by sharing current clinical knowledge, best practices, and advancements in LVAD care.
Program Development and Quality Improvement
- Support the ongoing development, coordination, and evaluation of the LVAD program to promote high-quality patient care and operational excellence.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to maintain continuous readiness for regulatory and accreditation surveys.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, performance monitoring, and data collection activities, including the INTERMACS registry.
- Contribute to the implementation of evidence-based practices and patient safety initiatives aligned with departmental and organizational goals.
- Participate in committees, interdisciplinary teams, and special projects representing the needs and priorities of LVAD patients and the program.
- Assist with monitoring, maintaining, and tracking LVAD equipment and device inventory to support program operations and patient care needs.
Professional Development and Community Engagement
- Maintain current knowledge of LVAD technology, heart failure management, clinical advancements, and relevant professional standards.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional growth through ongoing education, competency development, and participation in professional learning opportunities.
- Participate in community outreach activities and educational initiatives that promote awareness of LVAD therapy and advanced heart failure care.
- Foster collaborative relationships across departments and healthcare disciplines to support organizational goals and improve the patient experience.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse (RN).
OR
- Minimum of one (1) year of LVAD-specific clinical experience.
Education Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
Licenses and Certifications
Required:
- Current, valid Louisiana Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
