The Fixed Equipment Engineer Capital Projects provides technical leadership and specialized engineering expertise for the design, specification, evaluation, and execution of fixed equipment systems, including pressure vessels, tanks, piping, and heat exchangers, across capital projects. This role operates within centralized and project-based teams to ensure that all projects are designed and delivered in alignment with company standards, industry codes (ASME/API), and mechanical integrity expectations, while supporting safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations.
Responsibilities
- Provide fixed equipment engineering support across all phases of capital projects, including Front-End Loading (FEL), detailed engineering, construction, and commissioning.
- Review and approve engineering design packages for pressure vessels, piping systems, storage tanks, and heat exchangers to ensure technical accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure project designs comply with internal standards, recognized industry practices, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Support procurement activities by providing technical input for specifications, vendor selection, and equipment data sheets related to fixed equipment.
- Assist with fabrication, inspection, and construction activities to verify that fixed equipment is built and installed according to design and code requirements.
- Collaborate with EPC contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and optimize fixed equipment design and performance.
- Apply ASME, API, and related mechanical codes for the design, repair, and alteration of fixed equipment systems.
- Evaluate equipment designs through stress analysis and conduct or review fitness-for-service assessments in accordance with API 579.
- Provide technical recommendations for new installations, equipment modifications, and upgrades to improve reliability, safety, and lifecycle cost.
- Assist in developing inspection, testing, and mechanical integrity strategies that are integrated into the project scope and long-term asset management plans.
- Identify technical risks during design and execution phases, including design deficiencies, material selection concerns, and fabrication issues, and propose mitigation strategies.
- Support risk register management by documenting, tracking, and helping resolve technical issues and risks for project teams.
- Participate in hazard reviews, Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), and Management of Change (MOC) processes to ensure that fixed equipment risks are appropriately addressed.
- Contribute to operations planning related to fixed equipment, ensuring that new and modified assets support safe and efficient plant operations.
- Engage in project management activities related to fixed assets to help align engineering decisions with schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
Essential Skills
- Strong mechanical engineering background with experience in fixed equipment such as pressure vessels, tanks, piping, and heat exchangers.
- Proficiency in applying ASME, API, and related industry codes and standards to the design, repair, and alteration of fixed equipment systems.
- Hands-on experience with equipment repair, fabrication methods, and construction practices for mechanical and fixed assets.
- Ability to perform or review stress analysis and fitness-for-service assessments in accordance with API 579.
- Demonstrated capability in capital project execution across FEL, detailed engineering, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Experience in project management and operations planning related to fixed equipment and mechanical systems.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills for identifying and resolving design, material selection, and fabrication concerns.
- Ability to develop and interpret inspection, testing, and mechanical integrity strategies for fixed equipment.
- Effective collaboration skills for working with EPC contractors, vendors, and cross-functional internal teams.
- Familiarity with hazard review processes, including PHA and Management of Change (MOC), within an industrial or capital projects environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting procurement activities, including development of technical specifications and evaluation of vendor proposals for fixed equipment.
- background in operations or maintenance of mechanical and fixed equipment assets in industrial facilities.
- Knowledge of industry best practices for mechanical integrity programs and reliability engineering for pressure equipment.
- Ability to interpret and apply company engineering standards alongside regulatory requirements and industry practices.
- Strong organizational skills to support risk register management and structured issue resolution on project teams.
- Clear and concise communication skills for documenting technical decisions and coordinating with multidisciplinary stakeholders.
- Exposure to working within centralized engineering or project teams that support multiple capital projects.
Work Environment
This role operates primarily in a remote work environment, providing engineering support from an off-site location while collaborating with project and operations teams through digital communication tools. Limited travel to project sites is required to participate in design reviews, inspections, construction walkdowns, and commissioning activities as needed. Work focuses on industrial fixed equipment technologies, including pressure vessels, tanks, piping systems, and heat exchangers, within structured capital project frameworks. The environment emphasizes safety, mechanical integrity, and adherence to industry codes and standards, with a culture that values technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
