## Project Overview:

Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.

This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come.

This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810 (Part 810), which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.

## Job Summary:

The Lead EHS Advisor for Balance of Plant is the senior EHS authority for the BOP scope, accountable for EHS delivery across the turbine island, water systems, switchyard, tanks, underground services and associated site infrastructure. The role leads the EHS advisors assigned to those areas, sets the technical direction for how the scope's hazards are controlled, and works alongside the BOP construction management as the EHS voice in their planning. It is a field-based leadership position: the day is spent in the working areas, and the role is expected to hold the standard personally as well as through the team it leads.

## Major Responsibilities:

#### Leads EHS Delivery Across the BOP Scope

• Accountable for EHS performance across the Balance of Plant (BOP) scope, driving compliance and intervening when standards are not met.

• Leads and develops EHS Advisors and Officers, allocating coverage, setting priorities, coaching field interventions, and assessing competency.

• Exercises stop-work authority when required and supports EHS team interventions.

• Works closely with BOP construction management during planning, pre-job briefings, and shift handovers to integrate EHS requirements before work begins.

• Provides technical leadership on high-risk activities, including heavy lifting, excavations, marine works, high-voltage systems, confined spaces, pressure testing, hot work, and work at height.

• Reviews and challenges risk assessments, method statements, lift plans, temporary works, permits, and isolation schemes, verifying field compliance.

• Manages interface risks arising from simultaneous operations, shared work areas, site logistics, and boundaries with adjacent construction activities.

• Directs inspections, audits, and observations across the BOP scope, driving findings to closure and using trend data to focus resources on key risks.

Subcontractor and Workforce

• Holds subcontractors accountable for contractual EHS requirements, verifies implementation in the field, and escalates significant or recurring non-compliances.

• Assesses the adequacy of subcontractor EHS supervision and recommends reinforcement or replacement where necessary.

• Leads incident response and investigation activities, ensuring effective corrective actions and sustainable improvements.

• Promotes workforce engagement through toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, committees, and recognition programs, maintaining a visible presence in the field.

• Ensures environmental controls and permit requirements are implemented and maintained across the BOP scope.

• Reports EHS performance, trends, and key risks to project leadership, and represents the BOP scope during customer, regulatory, and corporate reviews and inspections.

## Education and Experience Requirements:

- Requires a Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) related to an environmental, health, safety or science-related discipline and a minimum of 10 years of EHS experience, the majority site-based on major construction projects, including prior experience leading an EHS team across a defined scope or area. In lieu of a degree, an equivalent combination of recognized professional certification and additional relevant construction EHS experience may be considered.
- Direct experience of Balance of Plant or comparable conventional power, heavy industrial or process plant construction is essential - turbine island erection, large mechanical and piping installation, water systems, tankage or high-voltage electrical works. Nuclear project experience is an advantage but conventional power and heavy industrial backgrounds are equally valued for this scope.

## Required Knowledge and Skills:

- Authoritative knowledge of heavy lifting - crane selection and configuration, tandem and critical lifts, ground bearing and outrigger loading, lift plan review - sufficient to challenge a rigging engineer's assumptions rather than simply check the paperwork.
- Deep knowledge of mechanical and piping construction hazards: confined space entry into tanks, vessels and culverts, hydrotest and pressure testing, energy isolation and lockout, hot work and fire watch, and scaffold and access for congested plant areas.
- Working knowledge of high-voltage electrical safety and switchyard construction, and of the transition from construction control to system energization and commissioning.
- Knowledge of civil and marine works hazards - deep excavation and ground support, dewatering, near-shore and over-water activity, and the temporary works that support them.
- A recognized EHS professional certification such as NEBOSH International Diploma or General Certificate, CSP, or chartered membership of IOSH or an equivalent body.
- Working knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, and of the environmental permitting and reporting regime applicable to major construction works.
- Familiarity with Polish health, safety and environmental legislation and European Union directives, or the demonstrated ability to work to an unfamiliar national regulatory framework with local specialist support.
- Proven ability to lead a field EHS team, including coaching less experienced advisors and holding a consistent standard across areas, shifts and subcontractors.
- Credible with craft, front-line supervision and construction management alike - able to stop a job, explain why, and keep the working relationship intact afterwards.
- Strong written and spoken English; Polish language ability is an advantage for workforce, subcontractor and regulator engagement.
- Eager to mentor others and pursue their development, with experience building national EHS capability in a host country.
- Proficient in MS Office and in EHS data and incident management systems used for performance reporting.
