About this role

If considered for the position you will be required to submit updated transcripts, work availability, and up-to-date class schedule if taking courses. Hours worked will be Monday-Friday between 7am-4:30pm, with every other Friday off. On-site work at AFRC is expected. Student will also be required to come to a NASA center to be fingerprinted and badged.

With mentor guidance, students are expected to take a concept from idea to small-scale implementation or demonstration. On-the-job learning is acceptable and expected.

This position includes various efforts related to multi-system interactions and communications. Each effort pushes the bounds on sensor and system development and implementation. The aim is to enable new flight techniques, speed up time to flight, and increase data throughput while pushing efficiencies. Current efforts target four main areas 1) in-flight payload release and recombination through novel magnetic techniques, precision sensing, and collaborative algorithms 2) no-wire vehicle architectures and technologies using RF and light-based inter-system communication techniques 3) self-reliant low-uncertainty timing and sensing techniques for reference-denied environments 4) novel image analysis techniques to generate unique data on atmospheric events and aircraft-atmosphere interactions especially involving challenging environments and low signal-to-noise data. Available tasks involve embedded system programming, mechanical design, robotic system design, object tracking, multi-sensor fusion, user interface design, power management, circuit board development, system-system communication, data processing, and computational imaging. Skills desired: Linux development, C/C++/Rust/Python, 3D modeling, machine vision, wireless communication, micro-controller programming, digital and analog interfacing, circuit layout and analysis.
