Job Title: Electrical Engineer Job Description
The Electrical Engineer is responsible for conceptual electrical design, development of detailed designs, preparation of construction documents, and construction administration for a diverse portfolio of building projects. This role operates with a high degree of independence, including hands-on engineering and design work in Revit, and offers the opportunity to manage projects from inception through completion, including coordination with internal design staff and participation in client meetings and deliverables based on experience. The position provides a clear growth path toward leading the electrical engineering team and potentially moving into a department manager or director-level role.
Responsibilities
- Perform electrical engineering for assigned projects, including research, engineering calculations, technical studies, and the preparation of design and construction documents.
- Develop conceptual and detailed electrical designs for building power distribution and related systems using Revit and other applicable tools.
- Coordinate electrical system designs with other engineering disciplines and architectural teams to ensure fully integrated building systems.
- Select appropriate electrical equipment and systems for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with project requirements, codes, and standards.
- Prepare schematic designs and layouts for building electrical systems, including power distribution and related building systems.
- Lead or support project management activities, including planning, organizing, and overseeing design tasks for electrical design staff as experience allows.
- Participate in client meetings to review design progress, gather requirements, present solutions, and support project deliverables.
- Perform construction administration duties, including reviewing submittals, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), and attending construction progress meetings.
- Observe construction progress in the field, document findings, and prepare field reports and punch lists to verify compliance with design intent and specifications.
- Take ownership of assigned projects, managing work independently while collaborating closely with the broader mechanical and electrical team.
- Contribute to a collaborative, learning-focused environment by sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues, and remaining eager to learn new technologies and methods.
Essential Skills
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in electrical engineering.
- A minimum of 5+ years of electrical engineering experience; 8+ years of experience is strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to work independently on projects, from design through construction administration.
- Strong proficiency with Revit for electrical design and production drafting.
- Demonstrated experience in building electrical engineering, including building power distribution design and building systems design.
- Ability to perform electrical engineering calculations, prepare technical studies, and develop complete design and construction documents.
- Experience coordinating electrical designs with architectural and other engineering disciplines.
- Capability to handle multiple responsibilities and wear multiple hats in a smaller, collaborative firm environment.
- Strong communication skills for effective coordination with internal teams, clients, and construction partners.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with correctional, healthcare, or higher education projects.
- Project management experience or a strong desire and aptitude to grow into an electrical department manager or director of electrical engineering role.
- Interest in leadership development with the potential to progress toward a department manager position for the electrical engineering team.
- Motivation to pursue continuing education and relevant industry credentials, such as LEED AP or lighting specialty certifications.
- Ability and willingness to visit job sites in Central Indiana as part of design coordination and construction administration.
- Comfort working in a smaller firm environment with a strong workload and long-term job stability.
- Interest in long-term career growth, including potential for company ownership within the next several years.
Work Environment
The role is based in a supportive and cooperative mechanical and electrical engineering office of approximately 20 employees, where collaboration and shared ownership of projects are highly valued. The team operates in a downtown Indianapolis location in the Pan Am Building near the convention and expo center, offering a vibrant urban setting. The work environment encourages engineers to take initiative, assume responsibility for their own projects, and remain eager to learn new skills and technologies. The organization strongly supports professional development, including pursuing additional certifications such as LEED AP and lighting specialty credentials. The standard schedule initially follows an 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. workday, with most employees eventually shifting to a 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. schedule and enjoying flexibility in start and end times. A hybrid work arrangement may be available for highly experienced individuals, particularly those with around 10+ years of experience who can take on a director-level role while still coming into the office and visiting job sites in Central Indiana. The company culture emphasizes growth potential, mentorship from experienced lead electrical engineers and project managers, the opportunity to wear multiple hats, strong workload stability, and the potential for future company ownership.
