About this role
This is an in person internship located at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA. The potential applicant would be conducting research in the laboratory and working directly with the silver dosing test systems. Ideally, the student should have some experience in wet chemistry laboratory testing.
As a residual microbial control, at controlled concentrations, silver can help prevent microbial growth during dormant periods as well as during active operations. The project is developing and evaluating both batch and inline silver dosing approaches for Moon Base potable water systems. For the inline system, we are using controlled release solid phase aluminosilicate monoliths with deposited silver chloride to passively dose silver as water flows through the device. We are also developing a batch silver dosing approach for stored potable water and for periods when the system may be dormant for a long duration.
For Moon Base missions, we also need to understand how gravity, orientation, flow rate, storage, and dormancy will impact the silver dosing. Testing will look at silver release and stability under these different conditions, including reduced gravity effects, different orientations and flow conditions, long duration operation, water storage, dormancy and restart. The objective is to understand how the silver dosing system will work during both active operation and when the Moon Base is left dormant.
Student responsibilities will include preparing and testing prototype silver dosing monoliths, conducting batch and inline dosing experiments, measuring silver concentration and water chemistry, and evaluating silver chloride deposition procedures. The student will also help study the effects of flow rate, orientation and gravity, conduct dormancy and restart testing, and perform long duration testing to determine the lifetime and performance of the monoliths.
