Job Title: Chemistry Lab Technician (Level 2) Job Description
The Chemistry Lab Technician supports a high-volume contract testing laboratory by managing sample registration, labeling, and delivery, and by performing a variety of wet chemistry and organizational tasks that keep multiple chemistry labs running efficiently. This role focuses heavily on accurate entry of samples into the LIMS system, preparation of samples for testing, and coordination of lab supplies and equipment, while offering clear opportunities for advancement within a structured lab technician career path.
Responsibilities
- Register incoming samples accurately into the LIMS system, print and apply labels, and organize sample sets for delivery to the appropriate laboratory for required testing.
- Deliver samples to the relevant labs for testing and pull samples as needed for preparation or retesting.
- Prepare samples for HPLC testing and, at the Tech III level, run and process HPLC analyses after receiving training.
- Perform balance work, including weighing samples, titrations, fat testing, and solids testing in accordance with established methods.
- Conduct general sample preparation activities such as pH testing and other wet chemistry procedures.
- Complete Core Method Training and Sample Registration Training to understand laboratory process flow and accurately support it.
- Register and deliver reagents and other laboratory supplies to the appropriate laboratories and storage areas.
- Open parcels containing samples and laboratory supplies and input relevant information into the appropriate systems for use.
- Follow applicable SOPs and adhere to GMP, GLP, USDA, and Quality standards for laboratory environments.
- Apply 5S methodology to organize and maintain inventory stocks, lab supplies, documents, forms, and items within work areas.
- Safely use, handle, and store laboratory equipment and chemicals in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Sterilize and wash glassware to ensure cleanliness and readiness for testing activities.
- Test laboratory hoods for proper air flow to support a safe working environment.
- Stock and order supplies to ensure laboratories remain well equipped and operational.
- Participate in team meetings and communicate clearly about deadlines, testing timelines, and completion status.
- Perform any other tasks needed to support efficient laboratory operations and workflow.
Essential Skills
- Experience with chemistry or wet chemistry techniques, including titrations, pH testing, and basic analytical procedures.
- Laboratory experience with sample registration processes and familiarity with LIMS or similar laboratory information management systems.
- Strong organizational skills to manage high sample volumes, maintain accurate records, and support multiple labs simultaneously.
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures and comply with GMP, GLP, USDA, and Quality standards.
- Competence in safe handling, use, and storage of laboratory equipment and chemicals.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in weighing samples, labeling, and data entry.
- High school diploma with 1 year or more of laboratory or sample registration experience, OR a 2-year or 4-year degree in a scientific discipline with willingness to work as a Lab Assistant for 6+ months.
- Willingness to complete Core Method Training and Sample Registration Training to fully understand laboratory process flow.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Preference for a Bachelors degree (BA/BS) in a science-related field, especially for advancement within the lab technician structure.
- Background in retail, customer service, or serving roles, demonstrating comfort being on your feet for extended periods, strong time management, teamwork, and ability to learn new tasks quickly.
- Interest in career progression within a structured lab technician ladder (Lab Assistant, Tech 1, Tech 2, Tech 3, Tech 4), with opportunities for increased responsibility and troubleshooting in the lab.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment handling a high volume of samples per shift.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with team members and labs on testing schedules and deadlines.
Work Environment
This position is based in a contract testing laboratory that primarily serves the milk and dairy industry and operates within a fast-paced chemistry department consisting of three main labs. On average, the team processes around 200 samples per shift, with approximately 50 samples per person, requiring efficient organization and consistent workflow. The role focuses on supporting organizational and preparatory activities rather than performing primary testing, ensuring that all labs receive properly registered, labeled, and prepared samples and supplies. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with an 8.5-hour regular shift and potential opportunities for overtime during the week and on weekends. The environment follows GMP, GLP, USDA, and Quality standards, emphasizing safe use and storage of equipment and chemicals, proper hood airflow, and clean, sterilized glassware. Team members benefit from paid holidays and two PTO floating holidays available from day one, as well as a clear career path within the lab technician structure that can allow advancement within the first year when educational criteria are met.
