Online shopping scams, imposter schemes, deep-fakes and consumer fraud are on the rise in Canada. CBC News is launching a new team to unearth deceptive practices and help Canadians make sense of what they can do to protect themselves.
We’re looking for a Senior Producer to help shape the programming while championing great journalistic content and the people behind it.
You will have experience leading teams covering all aspects of journalism, from breaking stories to deep-dives that require analysis of complex public records or data sets. You will ensure all of our work adheres to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, upholding the core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity. You will also have a keen knowledge of legal risk management.
You are someone who brings a deep understanding of audience needs and you’re passionate about getting our journalism in front of them wherever they are. While the stories will live on visual, audio and text platforms, your first priority is reaching new audiences and keeping them engaged on the CBC News App, CBC Gem as well as CBC News Youtube and TikTok channels. As such, you’ll bring strong production knowledge of vertical video, thumbnails, headlines, graphic treatments and other visual tools and technology.
While you will be reporting to an Executive Producer, you will be responsible for launching and nurturing a new team of journalists creating content for younger Canadians.
We are looking for an innovative and driven leader who brings an intelligent curiosity to the role everyday, and who knows that collaboration is key to the newsroom’s success. You’re a critical link between the broader CBC News ecosystem and the journalists you support.
As we value collaboration, and you’re creating new content and bringing together a new team, you’ll be working on-site at the Toronto Broadcasting Centre. It’s a Monday-Friday shift. The hours will be determined by production needs and could include early morning, late afternoon or weekend work and overtime.
What you’ll be doing:
- Working with the Executive Producer, you will develop new segment treatments
- Assign and coordinate regular editorial content, including story ideas, story angles and formats, leveraging data to ensure story choices resonate with audiences.
- Help develop the pitching and story creation skills of journalists on your team.
- Write, vet and review scripts, stories and question lines, ensuring adherence to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
- Work with on-air journalists to support the best delivery and performance across live, breaking and on-demand formats.
- Communicate with CBC News across regions and platforms, including the assignment desk, collaborating with peers and ensuring the unit’s content is shared broadly with programming teams.
- Help guide and support staff through change and team development.
- Exercise editorial responsibility as delegated by the Executive producer and management
- Maintain a robust contact list that reflects a broad range of perspectives, regional representation and potential guests from equity-deserving groups
- Obtain and organize technical and production resources as required.
We're looking for someone who:
- Has at least five years of recent, significant leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment, particularly in roles involving programming development and enterprise journalism.
- Bring a deep and nuanced understanding of artificial intelligence, consumer fraud, deceptive business practices and other schemes and scams.
- Demonstrated talent as a programmer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.
- Superior writing, editorial and production skills.
- Ability to identify and execute relevant, audience-focused stories which reflect issues being discussed by the general public.
- A track record of creativity and experimentation with different visual formats, story treatments and interview styles, and highly developed visual storytelling skills.
- Exceptional critical thinking, including problem solving, crisis management, visual verification and editorial judgment.
- A solid knowledge of CBC Journalistic Standards and practices and strong understanding of legal risk.
- Exhibits stellar communication and collaboration skills, essential for working across diverse teams and regions.
- Superior coaching and mentoring skills with both developing and veteran journalists, freelancers and guests.
- Experience working with hosts, reporters, guests and programming teams, providing guidance and meaningful feedback.
- A university degree or college diploma in journalism, or a related industry, audio production and programming and experience in local current affairs is an asset.
Please include a cover letter explaining why you are interested in this role. Your portfolio should include examples of investigative reporting and video that you have produced, and demonstrate your ability to generate strong visual stories across a variety of formats and platforms.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next
step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:
- A mandatory Criminal record check.
- Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
