Online shopping scams, imposter schemes, deep-fakes and consumer fraud are on the rise in Canada. CBC News is developing  a new Scams unit to unearth deceptive practices and help Canadians make sense of what they can do to protect themselves.

We’re looking for a Producer who will not only help shape the programming while championing great journalistic content and the people behind it but isn’t afraid to be the face of it when needed.

You’re a skilled journalist with experience in daily news and enterprise stories. You have exceptional research skills, experience with scams or fraud investigations and are  comfortable using open source information and digital forensic technologies to break new stories.

Reporting to the Senior Producer, you’re someone who brings both strong editorial leadership and logistical expertise to the role. You understand the important role of a public service broadcaster in helping Canadians make sense of their world. You’re the person on the front-line upholding the upholding the CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices and our core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity.

You’re an ideas generator, pitching stories and thinking about creative treatments to attract new and younger audiences. While you are adept at writing and editing video, audio and text-based content, you excel at mobile short-form video journalism, understanding what draws a viewer into your story and what keeps them engaged. You put the audience-first in your decision-making, vetting, producing, and are constantly searching for new voices and new perspectives to ensure our story-telling reflects the complexity and rich diversity of Canada.

You demonstrate daily the role of a public broadcaster in a media landscape proliferated with misinformation and rapidly evolving technologies. Verification is a core value. You lean into data, and use it to drive audience-focused storytelling.

You don’t wait to be assigned. You have initiative and can translate big ideas into tangible actions.

You’re a trend-setter, able to spot the latest in formats, tools and technologies and a willingness to experiment with same. You understand where new and younger audiences are finding their news - live and on-demand - and you’re focused on meeting them where they are at.

You understand that stories can break at any time of the day and you have a genuine desire to be on-top of that coverage. While this is a 5 day a week, Monday-Friday role, you recognize that you may be required to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and some overtime when needed to cover breaking news. As collaboration is key with this new team, you will be required to be on-site.

What you’ll be doing:

- Generate and execute compelling journalism, including pitching, researching, writing, shooting, generating and editing written, audio and visual content, with an emphasis on vertical and short-form video.
- Manage interview schedules, coordinate with other CBC colleagues on shared coverage and ensure safety protocols are followed
- Fact checking, verifying names, locations and translations against tight deadlines, ensuring all content adheres to the CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices (https://cbc.radio-canada.ca/en/vision/governance/journalistic-standards-and-practices). You also bring experience verifying video and other user generated or third party content.
- Produce original content, including the visual style, pace, tempo and format for live and on-demand content, including packaged items, photo galleries, soundscapes and current affairs.
- Driving production methods incorporating the latest changes to visual storytelling trends, practices, tools and techniques and a desire to experiment with the latest on creative technology.
- Performing location surveys and identifying special requirements such as audio, lighting, camera angles and equipment, including production limitations.

What you bring:

- You are a seasoned video-journalist with at least five (5) years of directly related investigative or enterprise experience.
- You perform best in a deadline driven, high pressure environment, with an ability to balance the pressure of delivering content quickly against the needs for accuracy and balance
- Proven record of highly creative, innovative visual storytelling
- Has a deep appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience, with an unwavering commitment to seek out voices from underrepresented groups
- Must have a strong sense of creativity, initiative and a high degree of responsibility for the accuracy and quality of work throughout the complete production cycle.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and client service skills are required.
- Ability to work independently in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining a professional attitude.
- Must demonstrate leadership skills and ability to pursue the acquisition of story elements with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime and various shift patterns including overnights and weekends.

Your application will be evaluated on your experience, as well as your portfolio of work. Please include at least two examples of:

- Packaged short-form video that you produced
- Packaged vertical video stories that you produced
- A cover letter that tells us why you want this role, and how you will use your experience to support the new unit

Please, do not use AI in your work samples or cover letter unless, of course, your work example is a story about AI.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:
