CBC News is launching a new team to unearth deceptive practices, like online shopping scams, imposter schemes, deep-fakes and consumer fraud. We’re looking for a Senior Reporter to be the face of stories that will help Canadians make sense of what they can do to protect themselves.
Reporting to the Senior Producer of CBC Scams, you demonstrate exceptional skills in on-camera presentation, interviewing, research, writing, prioritizing mobile and social platforms.
We’re looking for a reporter who lights up the screen, is warm and relatable, knows how to use humour at exactly the right moments, can laugh at themselves, and can be serious and ask the tough questions when the story demands it.
You consume short-story videos daily, including on CBC News apps, TikTok and YouTube. While you’re comfortable filing video, text and audio stories, you prioritize mobile-first storytelling, engaging with new and younger audiences where they are at, live and on-demand.
Vertical storytelling is core to your journalism. You know how to grab viewers’ attention within the first two to three seconds, and keep them engaged with dynamic pacing, fast cut edits, animation, visual layering and high-impact captioning.
As a senior reporter, you’re working ahead on dynamic video reports, but you’re also prepared to move fast on breaking news, providing updates as they come and pivoting where required. You are confident going live on digital live story pages and programs when required. You bring excellent presentation skills and can break down complex information quickly, simply and accurately on the fly. You thrive in a deadline-driven environment.
You have a strong Understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, upholding our core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity.
You take initiative and move stories forward with a strong investigative sense. You’re also a team player who welcomes stepping in to assist your colleagues when you see the need.
This job is 5 days a week, full-time, with an expectation to work overtime, early mornings, evenings and weekends as required. It’s a one-year full time position based in Toronto. As collaborating with teams across CBC News is a priority, you will be required to be on-site for this role.
Key tasks:
- Pitch stories about fraudulent practices, scams and consumer misinformation that will target new and younger audiences. Break news and follow developments.
- Go live when the story demands it – and file into live story pages and live programming.
- Gather news in the field and go on location if needed.
- Cover major or fast-moving events. Work well under pressure.
- Research, interview and gather new information.
- Craft work with a target 30-49 diverse Canadian audience in mind. Drive to develop content that will be relevant to this demographic. Make stories relatable to a general audience and explain the impact these stories have on people’s everyday lives.
- Generate and execute journalism that elevates a range of voices and perspectives.
- Shape scripts and file stories for all platforms. Prioritize a mobile and streaming audience.
- Work collaboratively with editors and vettors to sharpen writing, headlines and text.
- Understand the elements needed to produce strong visual stories.
- Be able to remain calm under pressure.
- Recognize issues of importance quickly and take effective action to ensure appropriate coverage. Prioritize demands.
- Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources. Be a leader in the beat and share expertise and knowledge with colleagues.
- Have a strong understanding of legal journalistic issues and the ethical principles of our Journalistics Standards and Practices.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues on CBC’s business unit, CBC Money, Marketplace, Go Public, Visual Investigations, and other parts of the CBC.
