Groundsman

Overview of Responsibilities

The Groundsman is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the overall appearance, playability, and safety of the Lyford Cay Club Golf Course and surrounding landscaped areas. This role performs a wide range of turfgrass, horticultural, grounds maintenance, irrigation, and golf course presentation duties to ensure the course consistently meets the high standards expected by Members and Guests.

The Groundsman operates specialized maintenance equipment, assists with agronomic programs, supports environmental and safety initiatives, and contributes to the efficient operation of the Golf Course Maintenance Department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Golf Course Maintenance

- Maintains greens, tees, fairways, roughs, approaches, bunkers, practice facilities, and naturalized areas to established Club standards.

- Mows turf using triplex, rotary, walk-behind, hydraulic, and other specialized mowing equipment.

- Changes golf course cups, tee markers, signage, ropes, stakes, and other course accessories.

- Repairs ball marks, divots, worn turf areas, and other surface imperfections.

- Assists with aerification, verticutting, topdressing, overseeding, and other cultural practices.

- Installs and repairs sod in designated areas.

- Removes weeds and invasive vegetation through manual and approved control methods.

- Maintains bunkers through raking, edging, sand distribution, and general upkeep.

- Screens and distributes topdressing materials as directed.

Landscape & Horticultural Operations

- Plants, prunes, trims, and maintains trees, shrubs, flowers, and ornamental plants throughout the property.

- Assists with landscape improvement projects and seasonal planting programs.

- Maintains landscape beds and removes debris from landscaped areas.

- Monitors plant health and reports disease, pest, or irrigation concerns.

Agronomic Operations

- Assists with the application of fertilizers, pesticides, soil amendments, and other approved products in accordance with Club procedures and safety regulations.

- Safely handles, stores, and utilizes chemicals and maintenance materials.

- Assists with turf health monitoring and implementation of agronomic programs.

Equipment Operation & Care

- Safely operates all assigned golf course maintenance equipment and machinery.

- Conducts daily equipment inspections and reports mechanical issues promptly.

- Cleans equipment after use and maintains work areas to departmental standards.

- Adheres to all equipment safety protocols and operating procedures.

Course Presentation & Member Experience

- Ensures the golf course is consistently presented in a clean, safe, and professional manner.

- Services water stations, benches, rain shelters, ball washers, trash receptacles, and related course amenities.

- Removes litter, fallen branches, and other debris from the golf course and maintenance areas.

- Assists with course setup and preparation for tournaments, special events, and member activities.

- Demonstrates courtesy and professionalism while working in areas occupied by Members and Guests.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

- High school diploma or equivalent required.

- Previous golf course, landscaping, horticultural, grounds maintenance, or agricultural experience a plus.

- Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

- Ability to follow instructions and complete assignments efficiently and accurately.

- Demonstrates professionalism when interacting with Members, Guests, and fellow employees.

- Basic understanding of workplace safety procedures and safe equipment operation.

- Dependable, punctual, and flexible in meeting operational requirements.

- Commitment to maintaining Lyford Cay Club standards of excellence.
