Job Title: Civil Engineer / Project Engineer – Rail and Transit Design
Job Description This role offers an opportunity for experienced Civil Engineers and Project Engineers to lead conceptual, permitting, and final design for major rail and transit projects in New York City. You will focus on transportation, highway, roadway, and stormwater infrastructure, delivering high-quality engineering design services that meet all applicable codes and standards. The position also involves preparing technical specifications, construction cost estimates, and engineering studies and reports across various stages of project development. Responsibilities
- Lead and execute conceptual, permitting, and final design for rail and transit projects in New York City.
- Provide civil engineering design services that conform to applicable codes, standards, and agency requirements.
- Develop engineering studies and technical reports for multiple phases of project work.
- Prepare detailed technical specifications for transportation, highway, roadway, and stormwater projects.
- Develop construction cost estimates and support budgeting for infrastructure projects.
- Perform roadway and highway design, including geometry, alignment, and associated civil infrastructure.
- Design site civil elements such as grading, drainage, and site plans for land and site development projects.
- Support the design of bridge and related transportation structures as needed.
- Apply proficiency in Civil 3D and Bentley MicroStation/OpenRoads to produce accurate design drawings and models.
- Work on projects for public agencies including DOT, DDC, and DEP, ensuring compliance with their standards and procedures.
- Handle complex technical design tasks on transportation, highway/roadway, and stormwater projects with minimal supervision.
- Contribute to project management activities, including coordination with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with clients, building strong working relationships and responding to project needs promptly.
- Participate in a variety of fast-paced projects, managing multiple responsibilities and deadlines.
- Support continuous improvement of design processes and standards within the civil engineering team.
Essential Skills
- 5–8 years of experience as a civil engineer designing infrastructure, roadway, highway, and transit projects.
- Demonstrated experience in rail and transit design for urban environments.
- Strong background in roadway and highway design, including transportation and stormwater projects.
- Experience working on projects for DOT, DDC, and DEP or similar public agencies.
- Ability to independently handle technical civil design tasks for transportation, highway/roadway, and stormwater systems.
- Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D for civil design and modeling.
- Proficiency in Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads for transportation and infrastructure design.
- Solid understanding of civil engineering principles, codes, and standards related to transportation and site civil work.
- Capability to prepare technical specifications and construction cost estimates for civil infrastructure projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and coordinating with project stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
- Experience in land development and site development projects.
- Expertise in grading and drainage design for site civil projects.
- Ability to develop comprehensive site plans for infrastructure and development projects.
- Exposure to bridge design and related structural coordination.
- Project management experience, including scheduling, coordination, and client interaction.
- Interest in working in a small, growth-oriented firm where team members wear many hats.
- Motivation to take on increasing responsibility and grow quickly within a dynamic environment.
Work Environment The role operates in a hybrid work environment, with time split between remote work and being in the office approximately twice per week. You will work in a fast-paced setting with a strong backlog of interesting projects in New York, Chicago, and Indianapolis. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $95000.00 - $125000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
