Job Title: Quality Engineer Job Description
The Quality Engineer plays a key role in supporting new program launches and ensuring robust quality processes across both pre-production and post-production activities. In this position, you create and submit PPAPs and APQPs, lead 8D and corrective action meetings, and develop control plans and PFMEAs while collaborating closely with internal teams, customers, and suppliers. You consistently make rational, data-driven decisions and apply strong analytical skills to maintain high standards of quality in an automotive manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Support new program launches by creating and submitting PPAPs, APQPs, control plans, and PFMEAs for automotive manufacturing processes.
- Split time between pre-production activities such as process development and documentation, and post-production activities such as issue resolution and continuous improvement.
- Administer corrective and preventive actions both internally and externally to address quality issues and prevent recurrence.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for Corrective Action Requests (CAR) and other customer-related quality issues.
- Lead 8D problem-solving and corrective action meetings to drive effective root cause analysis and sustainable solutions.
- Develop and optimize process parameters to ensure stable, capable, and efficient manufacturing operations.
- Lead and promote lean manufacturing methods, actively participating in continuous improvement projects utilizing Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Establish and maintain a robust document control system, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, forms, and templates.
- Perform detailed inspections of incoming raw materials prior to use in production runs to verify conformance to specifications.
- Lead investigations into reported incidents or failures, conduct thorough root cause analyses, implement corrective actions, and verify the effectiveness of actions taken.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop innovative, cost-effective solutions that meet customer requirements and quality standards.
- Work closely with customers and suppliers to communicate quality expectations, address concerns, and support ongoing improvements.
- Provide technical guidance and support to Quality Technicians and other team members involved in day-to-day quality activities.
Essential Skills
- Experience working as a Quality Engineer within automotive manufacturing, including familiarity with IATF requirements.
- Proven experience completing and implementing 8D corrective actions and preventive actions.
- Hands-on experience with PPAP, APQP, and PFMEA development and implementation.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis.
- Proficiency in blueprint reading and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Detail-oriented mindset with strong analytical tendencies and the ability to make rational, data-driven decisions.
- Ideally 5+ years of experience in quality engineering or a closely related role within manufacturing.
- Quality certification or formal qualification in quality engineering or a related discipline.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with machined metal products and precision machining processes.
- Background working with cast iron castings in a production environment.
- Exposure to CNC machining operations and related process development.
- Experience using MeasureLink or similar measurement data collection and analysis software.
- Quality Engineering certifications or additional professional credentials in quality or manufacturing.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including process engineering, program management, automation, and operations.
Work Environment
This role is based in a world-class precision machining and assembly environment focused on high-volume automated processes for automotive customers. You work on a team with other Quality Engineers and Quality Technicians, collaborating closely with Process Engineers, Program Managers, Automation Engineers, and Operations to ensure robust quality and efficient production. The typical shift starts at 7:00 a.m., with an expected workweek of approximately 45–50 hours. Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Troy, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $38.46 - $43.27/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
