Serve as a lab instructor for the Fire Science Technology Basic Firefighter certificate program. Responsible for assisting the classroom instructors in coordinating and facilitating the labs necessary to educate fire certificate students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Maintain required Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) certifications

- Develop proficiency with TCFP requirements for Basic Fire Suppression training programs

- Maintain academic and programmatic records as required by Midland College and TCFP, and submit documentation in a timely manner

- Participate in the instruction of Firefighter certificate lab courses

- Prepare lab for classes, help dismantle and clean up after lab activities

- Demonstrate the proper use of lab equipment and hazardous or bio-hazardous materials

- Provide leadership and positive role modeling for students

- Educate and assist students with learning of the various skills necessary for fire service

- Evaluate student performance

- Conduct formative and summative assessment of student learning

- Create and maintain a positive learning environment, displaying and requiring professionalism in all activities

- Work collaboratively with Midland Fire Department and other affiliates on meeting program goals and learning outcomes

- Adapt and apply laboratory methods, practices, and techniques

- Follow health and safety procedures and regulations

- Work with minimal direct supervision

- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

- Minimum three years experience in the provision of fire services

- Current minimum required certifications: Texas Commission on Fire Protection Firefighter-Basic and Instructor I

- Knowledge of modern municipal fire service principles, practices, and procedures, including the operation and maintenance of various types of fire apparatus and equipment utilized in training

- Proficient in the English language

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

- Associate's degree from an accredited institution or higher

- Texas Commission on Fire Protection Firefighter – Intermediate and Instructor II

- Successful college and/or fire service teaching experience

WORK ENVIRONMENT

- Typical office

- Business Hours

- M-Th 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. F 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

summer M-Th 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 pm

- Periodic evening and weekend hours during peak periods (e.g., open enrollment, payroll)

- Occasional travel (less than 10%)

Physical Demands:

- Must be able to lift or move equipment (up to 40 pounds) required for teaching in the program

- Must be able to ambulate to supervise students in the training environments

- Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time

- Use of manual dexterity

- Travel to training sites is required

Salary Range: $21.00 - $26.25 per hour
