Job Title: Assistant Project Manager Job Description
The Assistant Project Manager plays a key role in delivering high-quality construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. Working under the guidance of a Project Manager, this role helps plan, coordinate, and execute commercial construction projects to ensure they are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget. The position serves as a vital link between office and field operations, supporting communication, documentation, and problem solving across the project team, subcontractors, and clients.
Responsibilities
- Support Project Managers in planning, coordinating, and executing construction projects from preconstruction through closeout.
- Assist with estimating activities, including quantity takeoffs, bid review, budgeting, scope review, and subcontractor coordination.
- Contribute to preconstruction efforts such as project planning, budgeting, procurement, and participation in bid phases.
- Help manage and track project schedules, costs, and progress to ensure projects remain on time and within budget.
- Prepare, process, and track RFIs, submittals, change orders, and other project documentation.
- Maintain organized documentation management systems for project records, correspondence, and reports.
- Coordinate communication between office staff, Project Managers, subcontractors, and field teams to resolve issues and keep stakeholders informed.
- Support multiple active projects simultaneously, providing administrative and coordination support to one or more Project Managers.
- Assist with project closeout activities, ensuring all documentation, punch list items, and final requirements are completed accurately.
- Participate in occasional site visits to observe progress, gather information, and support field teams as needed.
Essential Skills
- 13+ years of experience as an Assistant Project Manager supporting commercial construction projects.
- Experience with estimating, including quantity takeoffs, bid review, budgeting, scope review, and subcontractor coordination.
- Preconstruction experience with involvement in project planning, budgeting, procurement, or bid phases.
- Strong understanding of the construction process from preconstruction through closeout.
- Experience supporting multiple projects and/or multiple Project Managers simultaneously.
- Strong project administration skills involving RFIs, submittals, change orders, cost tracking, and documentation management.
- Foundational project management and construction management skills.
- Ability to coordinate effectively across office and field operations.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in documentation and tracking.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background in construction management or related discipline.
- Experience working with commercial construction subcontractors and vendors.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse project teams, including office staff, Project Managers, subcontractors, and field personnel.
- Strong communication skills to support clear, timely information flow among stakeholders.
- Ability to manage competing priorities while supporting multiple active projects.
Work Environment
This role operates primarily in an office environment, with occasional visits to construction job sites as needed. The Assistant Project Manager spends the majority of their time supporting Project Managers through estimating, preconstruction, budgeting, project coordination, documentation, and administrative project management functions. The position involves close collaboration with office staff, Project Managers, subcontractors, and field teams, while supporting multiple active projects simultaneously. The work environment is professional, project-driven, and focused on delivering high-quality construction outcomes through strong coordination and documentation.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Maple Grove, MN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $38.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
