HIRING: Assistant Project Manager - MEP Construction

Job Description

We are seeking an Assistant Project Manager to support the planning, coordination, and execution of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEP/FP) scopes on large commercial construction projects. This position will work closely with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and design teams to help manage project schedules, budgets, procurement activities, and field operations. The ideal candidate will come from a mechanical contracting, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, or MEP construction background and have experience assisting with project management responsibilities throughout the construction lifecycle.

Responsibilities

- Assist in managing MEP/FP scopes from preconstruction through project closeout.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals for completeness and constructability.
- Support procurement efforts, including vendor selection, bid leveling, subcontract administration, and material tracking.
- Coordinate with MEP subcontractors, consultants, architects, and project teams to ensure project goals are achieved.
- Monitor project schedules and assist in resolving field coordination and installation conflicts.
- Track long-lead equipment and materials to ensure timely delivery and installation.
- Support change order management, cost tracking, forecasting, and budget control activities.
- Participate in project meetings and provide updates on MEP progress, risks, and outstanding issues.
- Assist with commissioning, startup, testing, balancing, and turnover activities.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with project specifications, building codes, and safety requirements.
- Maintain project documentation, logs, meeting minutes, and reporting requirements.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and field personnel.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field.
- 2-5+ years of experience supporting construction projects with a focus on mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, or electrical systems.
- Experience working for a mechanical contractor, MEP contractor, general contractor, or construction management firm.
- Understanding of HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and building systems.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and shop drawings.
- Experience coordinating subcontractors and supporting field operations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Procore, and similar construction management software.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

- Mechanical contracting or HVAC project engineering experience.
- Experience supporting commercial, healthcare, higher education, life sciences, aviation, transportation, or institutional construction projects.
- Exposure to project budgeting, forecasting, change orders, and cost control processes.
- Understanding of commissioning, startup, and turnover procedures.
- Knowledge of New York City construction practices, permitting, and building codes.
- OSHA 30 Certification preferred.
- Experience working on occupied renovations or phased construction projects.

Work Environment

This is an on-site role supporting active construction projects throughout the New York City area, with time split between the project site and project office. The position offers direct exposure to project management, field operations, subcontractor coordination, and complex building systems installation. This role is ideal for a Project Engineer, Mechanical Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, or MEP Coordinator looking to grow into a full Project Manager position within commercial construction.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New York, NY.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $36.05 - $48.08/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
