Job Title: Field Service Technician Job Description
The Field Service Technician installs, services, troubleshoots, and repairs custom-built industrial machinery, including electronic and hydraulic bending machines, tube cut-off machines, expanding machines, fin lines, and dies. The role involves frequent domestic and international travel to customer facilities, providing hands-on technical support, commissioning new equipment, performing maintenance and upgrades, and delivering on-site customer training.
Responsibilities
- Install, assemble, and commission custom-built industrial machinery at customer facilities, ensuring proper setup and safe operation.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on bending machines, tube cut-off machines, expanding machines, fin lines, dies, and other related equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance on machinery to minimize downtime and extend equipment life, following established procedures and schedules.
- Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and basic wiring diagrams to diagnose issues and complete installations and repairs accurately.
- Conduct machine upgrades and modifications as required, ensuring that all changes meet performance and safety standards.
- Start up new equipment and verify that all systems function correctly, making necessary adjustments to achieve optimal performance.
- Provide hands-on technical support and guidance to customers, answering questions and resolving operational issues on-site.
- Deliver customer training on proper machine operation, maintenance procedures, and basic troubleshooting techniques.
- Document service activities, repairs, and parts used in a clear and timely manner to support accurate maintenance records.
- Collaborate with internal teams to communicate customer feedback, recurring issues, and improvement opportunities related to machinery and service processes.
- Maintain a strong customer service focus by communicating clearly, professionally, and respectfully with customers and colleagues.
- Follow all safety guidelines and best practices when working with heavy equipment, industrial machinery, electrical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
Essential Skills
- 35 years of experience troubleshooting and repairing industrial machinery.
- Hands-on experience with machine building, machining, millwright work, tooling, or heavy equipment.
- Proven experience in machine maintenance, assembly, and installation in an industrial environment.
- Experience commissioning and starting up new equipment at customer sites or in a production environment.
- Basic electrical knowledge sufficient to work safely with wiring, controls, and simple circuits.
- Ability to work with pneumatics and hydraulics in the context of industrial machinery.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work confidently with machining equipment and heavy machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and basic schematics.
- Solid troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Customer service orientation with strong communication skills for interacting with customers and internal teams.
- Ability to work independently in the field, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing service demands.
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently (approximately 50% domestic and international travel).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelors degree is a plus.
- Experience with electrical design or documentation tools such as AutoCAD or EPLAN is preferred.
- Hydraulics and pneumatics experience beyond basic operation is an advantage.
- Ability to read and understand basic wiring and electrical schematics in more detail.
- Prior experience as a maintenance technician, field service technician, millwright, or heavy equipment technician is beneficial.
- Experience working with machining equipment and industrial production lines is desirable.
Work Environment
The role begins with 612 months of on-site training at the main facility in Sturgis, providing hands-on exposure to the companys custom-built machinery and service processes. Standard work hours are approximately 4045 hours per week, with additional hours when traveling. Travel is frequent and includes both domestic and international trips to customer locations around the world, with typical trips lasting no longer than 10 days, except for some international assignments. During travel, technicians receive overtime pay at 1.5x for travel time, with flights and hotels fully covered and a daily food allowance provided. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sturgis, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
