Job Title: Certified or Registered Medical Assistant Family Medicine Job Description
This role provides comprehensive clinical and administrative support in a family medicine department, focusing on high-quality patient intake, accurate clinical documentation, and coordinated care within a learning-focused medical environment. The Medical Assistant prepares patients and exam rooms, supports providers throughout the visit, and ensures that all clinical tasks and patient communications are completed accurately and on time.
Responsibilities
- Intake incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, confirming the chief complaint, reconciling medication lists and allergies, assessing smoking status, and preparing patients for their visit.
- Prepare exam rooms for patient visits by ensuring they are clean, organized, and fully stocked with necessary supplies, and restock the clinical area and exam rooms as needed.
- Sterilize instruments after use and maintain medical equipment in proper working condition according to established protocols.
- Document all clinical interventions and patient interactions accurately and promptly in the electronic medical record.
- Review patient charts for completeness, ensuring that test results, documentation, and billing information are accurate and up to date.
- Scan upcoming appointment schedules to identify and obtain any additional medical record information needed prior to patient visits.
- Obtain medical records from other physician offices, hospitals, laboratories, emergency rooms, and radiology departments before patient appointments.
- Complete all assigned tasks in the electronic system, including responding to patient messages, processing prescription refills, reviewing lab results, coordinating referrals, communicating with home health agencies, handling medication prior authorizations, managing patient forms, and following up on physician instructions.
- Ensure that all tasks assigned to the team, including coverage for absent Medical Assistants, are reviewed, addressed, and marked appropriately before the close of each business day.
- Participate as an active team member in the Patient Centered Medical Home by administering and collecting patient satisfaction surveys and contacting patients between visits to assess medical status and medication adherence.
- Follow established protocols related to infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality at all times.
- Complete required annual recertifications, including OSHA, Compliance, Respiratory FIT, IT policy training, and maintain current CPR and Medical Assistant certifications.
- Provide coverage for other clinical staff during vacations, illnesses, or staffing shortages, adapting to varying clinic needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by physicians or supervisors to support efficient clinic operations and high-quality patient care.
Essential Skills
- Certified or Registered Medical Assistant credential.
- Triage experience, including taking and documenting vital signs accurately.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
- Strong customer service skills with a focus on patient-centered care.
- Experience in a family medicine or primary care setting.
- Ability to follow clinical protocols related to infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality.
- Capability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and complete all assigned tasks by the end of each business day.
- Attention to detail in chart review, documentation, and handling of medical records.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with patients, providers, and other healthcare team members.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 1+ year of medical assistant experience preferred.
- Experience using Allscripts or similar electronic medical record systems.
- Comfort working within a Patient Centered Medical Home model.
- Ability to administer and collect patient satisfaction surveys and conduct follow-up calls regarding medical status and medication adherence.
- Willingness to complete annual recertifications, including OSHA, Compliance, Respiratory FIT, IT policy, CPR, and Medical Assistant certification.
- Flexibility to fill in for other clinical staff and adapt to changing clinic needs.
- Strong organizational skills for managing records, scheduling-related tasks, and coordination with external providers and facilities.
Work Environment
This position is based in a family medicine department within a learning-focused medical facility that emphasizes professional growth and skill development. The role follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break. Medical Assistants work closely with physicians, providers, and other clinical staff, using electronic medical records, including Allscripts, to manage patient information and documentation. The environment offers exposure to a wide variety of illnesses and treatments typical of family medicine, providing broad clinical experience. Staff follow established protocols for infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality while working in exam rooms and clinical areas equipped with standard medical instruments and equipment.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portsmouth, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
