Controllership Analyst – Refined Product Trading
Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) Finance & Risk teams provide financial stewardship, reporting, control and risk support to bp’s Supply, Trading & Shipping organisation. The Controllership team is part of Core Finance & Risk and owns controlled delivery of close and reporting activities for an assigned business or portfolio. The role reports to the Senior Manager, Controllership and provides technical controllership oversight across co-located, business and technology centre, and service-provider teams.
The Controllership Analyst performs and supports the accurate, timely and controlled delivery of close, accounting and reporting activities within defined scope as part of a team supporting the broader ST&S organization. The role prepares and reviews financial outputs, investigates movements and exceptions, operates financial controls and supports resolution of accounting, data and process issues, with opportunities to work across businesses and portfolios. It works with the Controllership Lead and specialist teams to apply accounting requirements consistently, support approved improvements in execution and escalate matters requiring broader prioritization, interpretation or decision-making.
In this role You will:
- Complete monthly, quarterly and annual close activities, preparing accurate and timely financial results, reconciliations, journals and reporting within agreed deadlines.
- Perform and support controllership activities for the assigned scope, which may include due diligence, management-to-accounting alignment, derivative and valuation accounting, intercompany matters, statutory reporting support and investigation of material movements.
- Operate and evidence assigned financial controls, identify control gaps or failures, support remediation and raise material risks or issues promptly.
- Support the accounting implementation of new buiness activity and business change within defined scope by documenting requirements, completing analysis and testing, and embedding approved process, data and control changes.
- Investigate accounting, data and process issues, identify root causes, support resolution across teams and provide clear explanations of impacts and required actions, raising items requiring broader decisions or specialist judgement.
- Contribute to standardisation and continuous improvement by maintaining process documentation, reducing manual activity, improving data quality and supporting automation and technology changes.
What You will need to be successful:
Financial Accounting, Reporting & Controls
- Strong practical knowledge of financial accounting, period-end close, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Working knowledge of accounting for physical and financial commodity activities, including valuation and derivative accounting, management-to-accounting alignment, balance sheet assurance, intercompany accounting, and statutory reporting.
- Ability to apply established accounting policies, procedures, and technical guidance while recognising when specialist expertise is required.
Commodity Trading & Business Understanding
- Good understanding of ST&S or a comparable commodity trading and supply business, including how trading activity, contracts, systems, market data, and operational events impact financial results.
- Strong awareness of the roles and responsibilities of Front Office, Commodity Risk, Commercial Finance, Technical Accounting, Core Finance, service providers, and external auditors, with the ability to work effectively across these functions.
Stakeholder Management & Communication
- Builds effective relationships with Finance and Risk partners, technical specialists, auditors, and delivery teams.
- Communicates accounting, reporting, and control matters clearly, provides constructive challenge, raises issues proactively, and collaborates effectively to resolve competing priorities.
- Demonstrates strong attention to detail alongside a practical and solutions-oriented approach.
Education & Professional Experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5-7 years of relevant experience in accounting, reporting, financial control, or controllership roles, including period-end close, reconciliations, controls, and the investigation and resolution of financial or data-related issues.
