Core Finanec Lead - Refined Product Trading

Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) Finance & Risk teams provide financial stewardship, reporting, control and risk support to bp’s Supply, Trading & Shipping organisation. The Controllership team is part of Core Finance & Risk and owns controlled delivery of close and reporting activities for an assigned business or portfolio. The role reports to the Senior Manager, Controllership and provides technical controllership oversight across co-located, business and technology centre, and service-provider teams.

The Core Finance Lead owns the accurate, timely and controlled delivery of an assigned portfolio of Core Finance activities. The role brings together management information and performance analysis, independent validation of valuations used in financial reporting, new activity support, project delivery and continuous improvement into a scalable, clearly governed service model. The role operates across Finance, commercial and service-delivery interfaces while maintaining clear accountability boundaries. The role is accountable for understanding external management accounting data requirements and ensuring valuations used for external management accounting are appropriate, supported and clearly explained.

In this role You will:

- Lead the production, validation and explanation of high-quality management information and performance analysis, ensuring material movements, data issues and valuation differences are understood and called out.
- Oversee independent valuation review for the assigned portfolio, including input data, curves, models, methodologies and adjustments, and ensure valuations used for external management accounting are appropriate, supported and aligned with defined data requirements.
- Lead Core Finance support for new commercial activity from assessment through implementation, coordinating Finance input, delivery plans, functional assurance, readiness activities and handover into sustainable business-as-usual processes.
- Manage cross-functional improvement and transformation initiatives, applying structured project delivery, process redesign and change management to simplify, standardise, automate or stop work.
- Set priorities across teams and locations, review complex outputs, coach colleagues and establish clear accountabilities, service expectations, documentation and escalation routes for assigned processes.
- Partner with Finance, commercial, technology and service-delivery participants to resolve complex data, valuation and process issues, ensuring the right expertise is engaged and accountabilities are clearly aligned across the end-to-end process.

What You will need to be successful:

Valuation, Financial Analysis & Business Transformation

- Deep practical knowledge of financial analysis, management information, valuation processes, data controls, new activity delivery, and business transformation within sophisticated trading or supply environments.
- Strong expertise in valuation methodologies, models, market curves, data lineage, control evidence, and the management accounting requirements impacted by valuation outputs.
- Working knowledge of project delivery, process design, change management, automation, and continuous improvement, with the ability to connect Finance, Commercial, Risk, Control, and Service Delivery functions to achieve high-quality outcomes.

Commodity Trading & Business Understanding

- Strong understanding of ST&S or a comparable commodity trading and supply business, including how transactions, market data, valuation methods, systems, and operational events influence management information and external management accounting.
- Brings clarity across Finance, Commercial, Risk, Control, Technology, and Service Delivery accountabilities, ensuring the right expertise is engaged to support sound decision-making and sustainable delivery.

Leadership, People Development & Delivery

- Provides day-to-day leadership for a Core Finance team or portfolio, setting priorities, defining outcomes, assuring complex deliverables, and developing capability through coaching, cross-training, and knowledge sharing.
- Leads project and agile delivery teams across organisational and geographical boundaries, driving alignment and creating clarity during operating model, process, and technology transformations.
- Demonstrates strong leadership through ownership, coordination, and the successful delivery of complex cross-functional initiatives.

Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving

- Exercises sound judgement to resolve complex valuation, data, reporting, process, and delivery challenges, often under tight deadlines and with incomplete information.
- Identifies root causes, evaluates commercial and reporting impacts, challenges assumptions, and develops practical, risk-based solutions.
- Engages appropriate Finance, Risk, Control, and functional partners to ensure timely decisions, clear accountability, and effective outcomes.

Stakeholder Management & Communication

- Builds trusted relationships across Finance, Commercial, Technology, and Service Delivery teams.
- Communicates complex valuation, data, and process matters in clear business language, provides constructive challenge, and stays in sync across competing priorities.
- Confidently facilitates workshops, escalates material issues when required, and maintains a collaborative, practical, and delivery-focused approach.

Operational Accountability & Business Impact

- Accountable for the quality, timeliness, and control of assigned Core Finance products, services, and change initiatives.
- Drives the reliability of management information, the appropriateness of valuations used for management accounting, the readiness of new commercial activities, and the effectiveness of process improvements.
- Contributes to greater efficiency, standardisation, scalability, and capability across ST&S Finance & Risk operations.

Education & Professional Experience

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Finance, Economics, Business, Engineering, Data, or a related field.
- 6-8 years of post-degree experience, including at least 5 years of coaching and/or leading others.
- Significant experience in commodity trading finance, valuation control, management information, commercial finance, new activity delivery, transformation, project management, or a comparable analytical environment.
- Proven track record of leading complex work across functions, teams, and geographic locations.
