Core Finance Analyst – Refined Product Trading

Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) Finance & Risk teams provide financial stewardship, reporting, control and risk support to bp’s Supply, Trading & Shipping organisation. The Controllership team is part of Core Finance & Risk and owns controlled delivery of close and reporting activities for an assigned business or portfolio. The role reports to the Senior Manager, Controllership and provides technical controllership oversight across co-located, business and technology centre, and service-provider teams.

The Core Finance Analyst independently delivers assigned Core Finance activities with accuracy, control and sound judgement. As part of an agile pool of Core Finance talent, the role may flex across products, services, portfolios or initiatives in response to business priorities and to support individual development. The role produces and explains management information and performance analysis, completes valuation review activities, supports new activity implementation, and drives defined improvement initiatives.

In this role You will:

- Independently produce, validate and explain high-quality management information and performance analysis, investigating material movements, data issues and valuation differences, recommending actions and raising significant matters.
- Perform valuation review activities for assigned portfolios with appropriate independence, including assessment of input data, curves, models, methodologies and adjustments, and support well-evidenced valuations aligned with external management accounting data requirements.
- Support new commercial activity from assessment through implementation by coordinating assigned Finance inputs, maintaining delivery plans, completing functional assurance and readiness activities, and supporting handover into sustainable business-as-usual processes.
- Lead defined improvement initiatives within agreed scope, using structured project delivery, process redesign and change management to simplify, standardise, automate or stop work.
- Own assigned processes and deliverables end to end, maintain documentation and control evidence, and flex across Core Finance activities as business needs evolve, building breadth of experience and supporting individual development.
- Work with Commercial Finance, Controllership, Finance & Risk Advisory, the Front Office, technology and service-delivery teams to resolve data, valuation and process issues, supporting clear, coordinated delivery across changing Core Finance priorities.

What You will need to be successful:

Valuation, Financial Analysis & Management Information

- Strong practical knowledge of financial analysis, management information, valuation processes, data controls, business improvement, and new activity delivery within a complex trading or supply environment.
- Good understanding of valuation methodologies, models, market curves, data lineage, control frameworks, and how valuation outputs impact external management accounting and reporting requirements.
- Working knowledge of project delivery, process design, change management, automation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Commodity Trading & Business Understanding

- Strong understanding of ST&S or a comparable commodity trading and supply business, including how transactions, market data, valuation methods, systems, and operational events influence management information and external management accounting.
- Comprehensive understanding of the roles and accountabilities of Front Office, Commercial Finance, Controllership, Finance & Risk Advisory, Technology, and service providers, with the ability to work effectively across these interfaces to support high-quality Core Finance delivery.

Leadership, Delivery & Collaboration

- Provides leadership through technical expertise, ownership, coordination, and influence rather than direct people management.
- Plans and coordinates deliverables, reviews delegated outputs, shares knowledge, supports less experienced colleagues, and contributes to project and agile delivery teams.
- Helps create clarity and alignment during process, system, and technology changes.

Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving

- Applies independent judgement to valuation, data, reporting, process, and delivery challenges within established governance and control frameworks, often under tight deadlines.
- Investigates movements, exceptions, and issues; identifies root causes; assesses impacts; and recommends practical, risk-based solutions.
- Recognises when matters require escalation and engages the appropriate Core Finance, Controllership, Finance & Risk Advisory, or specialist risk teams.

Stakeholder Management & Communication

- Builds effective relationships across Finance, Commercial, Technology, and Service Delivery functions.
- Communicates complex valuation, data, and process matters clearly, facilitates productive discussions, manages competing priorities, and drives collaborative issue resolution.
- Maintains a practical, controlled, and delivery-focused approach while ensuring participants remain aligned.

Education & Professional Experience

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Finance, Economics, Business, Engineering, Data, or a related field.
- 6-7 years of relevant experience in commodity trading finance, valuation control, management information, commercial finance, new activity delivery, project delivery, operational improvement, or a comparable analytical environment.
- Proven track record of independently delivering complex work, resolving issues, and coordinating successfully across multiple teams and partners.
