GWCCA PUBLIC SAFETY OVERVIEW
The Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) Public Safety function is responsible for delivering safe and efficient support to world-class events and guest experiences. Through strong communication with neighboring agencies, operational oversight, vendor partnerships, and team leadership, Public Safety ensures the Authoritys facilities operate at the highest standards of quality, safety practices, emergency management, and incident response.
GWCCA EXPLOSIVES ORDINANCE DISPOSAL K-9 HANDLER POSITION SUMMARY
The Authority is currently hiring an Explosive Detection Canine (EOD K9) Handler to join our team. The Explosive Detection Canine Handler is a sworn police employee certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) as a police officer. The EOD K9 Handler performs under general instruction, but with established policies and procedures to achieve successful results in support of the GWCCAs mission, goals, policies, and objectives. This position reports to the Police Major.
Successful candidates embody the Authority's core values of authenticity, accountability, and collaboration while carrying out the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Candidates under final consideration must complete a criminal history evaluation and drug screening as a condition of employment.
GWCCA EXPLOSIVES ORDINANCE DISPOSAL K-9 HANDLER WORK ENVIRONMENT
Law Enforcement work can be very dangerous and stressful. In addition to the obvious dangers of confrontations with criminals, police officers need to be constantly alert and ready to deal appropriately with a number of threatening situations. Officers frequently work weekends, holidays, and nights. Officers are expected to work at any time their services are needed and may work long hours standing post. Officers are expected to report for duty in full uniform with the appropriate and necessary equipment needed in the performance of their duty. All positions are required to work in inclement weather conditions if necessary.
GWCCA EXPLOSIVES ORDINANCE DISPOSAL K-9 HANDLER PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is moderately exposed to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, toxic chemicals, electrical currents, pathogens, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, traffic, animals, and/or loud noises. The ability to lift 50 pounds or more may be required of this position. Daily shifts will endure various degrees of walking, standing, turning, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing and pulling, requiring a full range of body movements. This position may require work inside or outside of the building, as needed by events.
GWCCA EXPLOSIVES ORDINANCE DISPOSAL K-9 HANDLER ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Georgia P.O.S.T. police officer certified in good standing
- Safely use and qualify with firearms, chemical agents, and other weapons.
- Operate a motor vehicle under normal and emergency conditions.
- Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
- Write clear, comprehensive, and accurate reports, legibly and with correct grammar and spelling.
- Understands, interprets, and applies criminal laws, regulations, policies and procedures with a focus on the laws of arrest, use of force, custody, search and seizure, and juvenile laws.
- Demonstrates the ability to implement police methods and procedures including patrol techniques, response to crimes in progress, apprehension of suspects, traffic enforcement, accident investigation, crime scene management, and crowd control.
- Efficient in the principles and practices of effective interpersonal communication and good customer service.
- Operates as K-9 handler to provide explosives detection screening of GWCCA deliveries, vehicles entering upon or adjacent to GWCCA property, sites of special events on GWCCA property, and routine patrol of grounds.
- Handles K-9 when responding to special requests for explosive detection based on unusual or suspicious circumstances.
- Responsible for all maintenance, care, handling and training of assigned K-9.
- Patrols building with K-9 and reports unusual situations or unauthorized individuals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned

GWCCA EXPLOSIVES ORDINANCE DISPOSAL K-9 HANDLER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
- Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, techniques, and equipment.
- High degree of integrity and work ethic.
- Knowledge of oral and written skills.
- Detail oriented.
- Assess, analyze, and manage risk factors in the face of uncertainty.
- Ability to work an irregular work schedule as required to perform duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to attend and successfully complete extended-length training to certify as a K9 detection team.
- Works with assigned K-9 to maintain overall GWCCA security and to protect staff, visitors and facilities.
- As a K-9 team, patrols and responds to incidents at GWCCA, Mercedes Benz Stadium or other facility as directed by the Chief of Police or his designee.
- Provides emergency services and explosive detection capability.
- Maintain proficiency in use of personal computer (PC) and related software and be proficient in record-keeping.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and technological developments in the K-9 and Law Enforcement field.
- Maintains proficiency and certification for self and K-9 in explosive detection in accordance with applicable laws and GWCCA policy.
- Maintain a physical fitness regimen; be a non-smoker or agree not to smoke in the presence of the canine.
- Have the ability to provide suitable care, feeding, grooming and living conditions for canine
GWCCA EXPLOSIVES ORDINANCE DISPOSAL K-9 HANDLER EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- Georgia P.O.S.T. certified officer in good standing
- Two years employment experience as a certified sworn police officer
- Valid Georgia Drivers License.
