LM Space/IGNITE matures and transitions capabilities focused on our Space Enterprise internal and external customer needs. This position will contribute to electro-optics (EO), laser radar, and directed energy (DE) program work under the LM Space Ignite, Advanced Capabilities Electro-optics & Security (ACES) Directorate. ACES conducts applied research and rapid prototyping of systems & subsystems in relevant or operational environments, develops first-of-kind optical systems, and supports national defense with electro-optics and other technologies. This role will support the creation of discriminating and disruptive technologies, and performance of first-of-kind demonstrations in support of critical national needs in areas including electro-optics, laser radar, directed energy and power beaming. The position will support activities with multiple LM and government entities.
The ACES DIrectorate is seeking a Senior Staff Solid State/Fiber/Gas Laser and Non-linear optical Engineer with expertise in the development of fiber lasers/amplifiers and nonlinear optical systems and devices. You should have experience in the design and modeling of lasers/amplifiers and frequency conversion devices, familiarity with current state-of-the-art in solid-state and fiber lasers/amplifiers and nonlinear optical materials, and experience with the characterization and optimization of laser and nonlinear optical systems. Additional knowledge of related laser-based remote sensing technologies is desired, including coherent and direct detection laser radar, radiometry, Fourier/wave optics, beam propagation, and/or atmospheric sciences. Some of your responsibilities in this role will include the following:
• Selection of laser and/or nonlinear optical technologies
• Design of laser and nonlinear optical systems and devices
• Evaluation of predicted performance through computational modeling and analysis
• Laboratory testing and experimental demonstration
• Prototype development
• System analysis and integration
• Field demonstration
• Leadership of and/or contribution to summary reports, oral presentations, and/or technical proposals is expected.

Standard Job Description: Conducts research and plans development and design of solid-state, fiber, and/or gas lasers, infrared and other light-emitting and light-sensitive devices. Designs electronics circuityry and optical components with specific characteristics to fit within specified mechanical limits and to perform according to specifications. May conduct application analysis to determin commercial, industrial, scientific, medical, military or oterh use for electro-optic devices. Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice.
Basic Qualifications
1. Undergraduate degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related STEM field
2. Ten or more years of experience in the design of laser and nonlinear optical systems and devices, including laser resonators, amplifiers, and parametric frequency converters
3. Eight or moer years of experience in modeling and analysis of pulsed solid-state lasers and/or nonlinear optical frequency conversion
4. Significant experience in one or more of the following areas:customized simulations of laser physics and/or quantum opto-electronics, diffractive beam propagation, thermo-optic effects and parametric optical processes
5. Strong knowledge of laser and optical physics
6. U.S. citizenship and willingness/ability to obtain/retain a Top Secret Clearance
Desired Skills
1. Advanced degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Math, or related fields is strongly desired
2. Experience in related laser-based remote sensing technologies (i.e. coherent and direct detection laser radar, radiometry, Fourier/wave optics, beam propagation, and/or atmospheric sciences, optical detection, signal/image processing).
3. Field-related contacts/network.
4. Experience with product development, technology development and technology transition
5. Expertise in high-power ruggedized pulsed and continuous-wave fiber laser systems is desired
6. Experience as a proposal technical lead
7. Expertise in directed energy systems is desired
8. Technical leadership of laser and NLO hardware transition to high TRL (for terrestrial, airborne, and/or space applications)
9. Existing TS/SCI clearance
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $166900.00 - $309900.00
