Job Title: Lab Assistant Inpatient Phlebotomy (Full-Time, CPT 1) Job Description
This full-time Lab Assistant role focuses on inpatient phlebotomy and specimen processing in a fast-paced hospital laboratory environment. The position involves performing venipunctures on adults and pediatric patients, micro collections on infants, and supporting laboratory operations through data entry, specimen handling, and communication with clinical staff to resolve specimen-related concerns. The role requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, attention to detail, and excellent customer service in a close-knit team setting.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures on adult and pediatric patients in an inpatient hospital setting.
- Conduct micro collections on infants using appropriate phlebotomy techniques such as heel and finger sticks.
- Execute special phlebotomy procedures, including blood cultures, following established protocols and safety standards.
- Process laboratory specimens accurately, including labeling, sorting, and preparing samples for analysis.
- Participate in data entry activities, including entering patient and specimen information into computer systems and laboratory information systems.
- Operate computer input terminals and use typing and word processing skills to support laboratory documentation and workflow.
- Communicate effectively with clinical staff and clients to resolve specimen concerns, clarify orders, and ensure proper handling and routing of samples.
- Provide courteous and professional customer service to patients and healthcare team members during specimen collection and laboratory interactions.
- Follow instructions and work under the supervision of laboratory leadership, including Director of Laboratory Services, Assistant Director, and Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientists.
- Adhere to all laboratory policies, procedures, and quality standards to maintain accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance.
- Support general laboratory operations by assisting with routine tasks and performing other duties as assigned.
- Work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled to ensure continuous laboratory coverage.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture and micro collection procedures such as blood cultures, finger sticks, and heel sticks.
- 12 years of experience as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) in a hospital setting, or relevant experience in a reference laboratory.
- Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certificate.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- Strong communication skills, including fluency in English for both verbal and written interactions.
- Ability to operate computer input terminals and perform accurate data entry.
- Typing and word processing skills sufficient to support laboratory documentation and administrative tasks.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and healthcare staff.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Willingness and ability to work rotating weekends and holidays and to be flexible with shift assignments, including AM and PM shifts.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Experience performing laboratory assays is preferred.
- Familiarity with inpatient workflows and floor-based specimen collection.
- Comfort working both on the patient floors performing draws and in the laboratory processing specimens.
- Ability to collaborate within a close-knit team and maintain positive working relationships.
- Reliability in adhering to posted schedules and responding to changing operational needs.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic clinical environment.
Work Environment
This is a full-time position, typically 40+ hours per week, in a fast-paced hospital laboratory setting. The role combines work on the patient floors performing blood draws with time in the laboratory processing specimens, offering a varied and hands-on environment. The primary PM shift runs from approximately 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with flexibility required to work AM shifts as needed. The schedule includes every other weekend and one minor holiday and one major holiday, with schedules posted two weeks in advance. Initial training occurs Monday through Friday, and once training is successfully completed, the employee transitions into a rotating schedule. The Lab Assistant works under the supervision of laboratory leadership, including the Director of Laboratory Services, Assistant Director, and Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientists, within a close-knit, supportive team. The environment emphasizes accuracy, patient-centered service, and efficient specimen handling while using computer terminals and standard laboratory equipment to support diagnostic testing.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Covina, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $27.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
