Job Title: Lab Assistant Certified Phlebotomy Technician (In-Patient, Full-Time) Job Description This full-time Lab Assistant position focuses on in-patient phlebotomy and specimen processing in a fast-paced hospital laboratory setting. The role involves performing venipunctures on adults and pediatric patients, micro-collections on infants, and supporting accurate data entry and specimen handling. You contribute directly to patient care by ensuring high-quality blood collection and excellent customer service while collaborating closely with clinical laboratory staff. Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures on adult and pediatric patients in an in-patient hospital environment.
- Perform micro-collections on infants, including finger and heel sticks, following established protocols.
- Carry out phlebotomy techniques, including special procedures such as blood cultures.
- Process specimens in the laboratory, including labeling, handling, and preparing samples for analysis.
- Participate in accurate data entry using computer input terminals and laboratory information systems.
- Communicate professionally with clients and clinical staff to resolve specimen-related concerns and clarify orders when needed.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients and internal stakeholders, maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
- Use typing and word processing skills to complete documentation, logs, and related laboratory records.
- Follow the direction and guidance of supervisory clinical laboratory scientists and laboratory leadership.
- Adhere to all laboratory policies, procedures, and quality standards to ensure safe and accurate specimen collection and processing.
- Support workflow on the patient floors by performing blood draws and in the lab by processing specimens as assigned.
- Participate in training and ongoing competency assessments and perform other duties as assigned to support laboratory operations.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture, blood cultures, finger sticks, and heel sticks.
- 12 years of experience as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) in a hospital setting, or in a reference laboratory environment.
- Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certificate.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- Strong understanding of medical and laboratory terminology relevant to phlebotomy and specimen collection.
- Ability to operate computer input terminals and use laboratory information systems for data entry.
- Accurate typing and word processing skills for documentation and record keeping.
- Fluent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact compassionately and professionally with patients and staff.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols.
- Flexibility to work rotating weekends and holidays and AM shifts.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Experience performing laboratory assays is preferred.
- Previous in-patient phlebotomy experience is highly beneficial.
- Experience in a close-knit laboratory team environment is an advantage.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address specimen concerns and workflow challenges.
- Ability to follow supervisory guidance and collaborate effectively with clinical laboratory scientists and other healthcare professionals.
- Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to adapt to schedule changes posted in advance.
Work Environment This is a full-time, in-patient hospital laboratory position with a fast-paced and collaborative atmosphere. The role involves working both on the patient floors performing blood draws and in the laboratory processing specimens, contributing to a close-knit team environment. The standard schedule is an AM shift from approximately 4:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The position typically requires 40+ hours per week, including every other weekend and one minor holiday and one major holiday. Training is conducted Monday through Friday; after successful completion of training, the schedule rotates, and work schedules are posted two weeks in advance. You work under the supervision of laboratory leadership and supervising clinical laboratory scientists, using computer terminals and standard laboratory equipment while adhering to all safety and quality protocols.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $27.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
