Job Title: Assistant Project Manager Job Description
The Assistant Project Manager supports the administrative and technical execution of commercial and heavy-civil construction projects. This role works closely with division leadership, project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, suppliers, clients, and safety personnel to help deliver projects safely, on time, and within budget. It is an early-career construction management opportunity ideal for someone with approximately two to three years of directly relevant experience, including qualifying internships or co-ops, or for a recent Construction Management or Civil Engineering graduate who can demonstrate practical construction knowledge, maturity, strong communication skills, and alignment with the companys core values.
Responsibilities
- Support the administrative and technical execution of commercial and heavy-civil construction projects from pre-construction through closeout.
- Manage construction documents, ensuring accurate organization, distribution, and control of plans, specifications, and related project records.
- Prepare, process, and track Requests for Information (RFIs), ensuring timely communication and resolution of project questions.
- Coordinate, submit, and track submittals, shop drawings, and related approvals to keep the project on schedule.
- Assist with the preparation, review, and processing of change orders, including supporting documentation and cost impacts.
- Support contract administration, including reviewing contract documents, monitoring compliance, and maintaining accurate records.
- Assist with project scheduling using Procore or similar scheduling tools, helping to update and monitor project timelines and milestones.
- Track project costs, quantities, and budget items, and help identify variances or potential cost impacts.
- Support bid review and estimating activities by gathering quantities, reviewing plans, and coordinating with subcontractors and suppliers.
- Coordinate purchasing activities, including obtaining quotes, issuing purchase orders, and confirming delivery schedules.
- Facilitate communication and coordination between field and office personnel, including superintendents, subcontractors, and project managers.
- Assist with project closeout activities, including final documentation, as-built records, warranties, and turnover packages.
- Help maintain construction document control systems to ensure accuracy, version control, and accessibility for project stakeholders.
- Collaborate with team members to uphold safety, integrity, collaboration, respect, and innovation as core operating values.
- Maintain confidentiality of all customer and company information while representing the company professionally with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Develop and foster positive relationships with customers, potential customers, subcontractors, and suppliers while maintaining ethical standards.
Essential Skills
- Approximately 2+ years of directly relevant construction management experience, including applicable internship or co-op experience.
- Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field, or an associate degree supported by 3+ years of construction knowledge.
- Experience working in commercial, civil, heavy-highway, infrastructure, or design-build construction environments.
- Hands-on experience with RFIs, submittals, change orders, project schedules, cost tracking, or construction document control.
- Experience using Procore or similar construction scheduling and project management software.
- Entry-level knowledge of heavy-highway construction methods and materials, costing, scheduling, and estimating.
- Working knowledge of heavy-highway construction management, construction sequencing, and field conditions.
- Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work effectively with multiple positions and co-workers across office and field operations.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a project-driven environment.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills, both written and verbal, suitable for interacting with internal teams and external partners.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Previous managerial or supervisory experience in the construction industry.
- A four-year degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management is preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of, and experience with, construction or project management software.
- Professional demeanor and appearance appropriate for interacting with clients, subcontractors, and internal leadership.
- Strong, self-motivated team player with a high level of personal ethics and integrity.
- Ability to develop, maintain, and foster a positive company image with customers, potential customers, subcontractors, and suppliers.

Work Environment
This is a full-time, salaried position, typically working Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., averaging approximately 45 hours per week. The role is primarily office-based with a mix of in-office and on-site work. The Assistant Project Manager will work mostly in the office, using construction management and scheduling software such as Procore, along with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for daily tasks and documentation. The position includes occasional visits to active construction sites to meet with superintendents and subcontractors as needed, providing exposure to heavy-highway, civil, and commercial construction environments. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbus, IN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $32.69 - $37.50/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
