Job Title: Field Service Engineer Job Description
The Field Service Engineer troubleshoots and maintains complex building and laboratory systems, including access controls and locking mechanisms, air flow systems, lighting controls, HVAC, and plumbing. This role focuses on providing preventive, warranty, and emergency service for specialized equipment used primarily in laboratory and research environments. The position requires frequent travel to customer sites and offers the opportunity to work with a unique, one-of-a-kind system developed specifically for animal research facilities.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot access control systems, locking mechanisms, air flow systems, lighting controls, HVAC systems, and plumbing-related components at customer sites.
- Perform preventive maintenance on all products according to manufacturer specifications and a predetermined service schedule.
- Provide warranty service and support on all products in accordance with documented specifications and company standards.
- Deliver emergency service and support on all products, including on-call or time-sensitive responses when required.
- Review system installations to ensure they meet design specifications and operational requirements.
- Begin and support system commissioning, including verifying proper operation, making adjustments, and documenting results.
- Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to understand system layouts, components, and connections.
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues in the field and perform repairs or adjustments as needed.
- Document service activities, maintenance actions, and repairs performed on-site in a clear and accurate manner.
- Communicate effectively with customers in laboratory and research environments to explain findings, recommended actions, and system status.
- Travel frequently to customer locations, including universities, research institutions, and pharmaceutical companies, to perform service work.
- Adhere to all site-specific procedures and protocols when working in laboratory and animal research facilities.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 2 years of field service experience in a technical or mechanical environment.
- Minimum 2 years of experience reading and interpreting blueprints.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working around HVAC or plumbing systems, either professionally or through equivalent hands-on experience.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical systems in the field.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical systems and components in the field.
- Experience performing repair and maintenance work as a maintenance technician or similar role.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve issues with access controls, locking mechanisms, and related control systems.
- Ability to work independently in customer environments and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to troubleshooting.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with customers and internal teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel 7585% of the time for field service assignments.

Work Environment
The Field Service Engineer works primarily in laboratory and animal research facilities that rely on specialized systems for air flow, access control, lighting, HVAC, and plumbing. The role is not labor intensive but does require frequent on-site presence in customer labs, including facilities at universities and pharmaceutical companies. Travel is a significant component of the position, with approximately 7585% of time spent on the road. The company provides a small van as a company vehicle, and flights are covered for air travel. Employees receive a per diem for hotel and food, but they should be prepared to pay upfront for meals, hotels, and rental cars, typically around a set amount per month on a personal or corporate card before reimbursement. Annual working hours are approximately 400500, with higher hours expected during training periods. On occasion, the engineer may need to remain on-site through a weekend; when this occurs, they receive time off at another time to balance their schedule. Work is performed in controlled indoor environments typical of laboratories and research facilities, with adherence to site-specific protocols and safety procedures.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
