Position Summary
The Upper School Boys Basketball Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in fostering a positive, competitive, and values based athletic experience for students. The Assistant Coach is responsible for helping develop student-athletes' skills, promoting sportsmanship, supporting team operations, and contributing to a culture that reflects the mission and values of the Wichita Collegiate School.
Primary Responsibilities
Coaching and Student Development
• Ability to work the entire boys basketball season: December 1, 2026 - March 31, 2027
• Assist in planning and conducting practices that emphasize skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
• Help prepare student-athletes for competitions through effective instruction and positive motivation.
• Promote character, resilience, leadership, and respect among team members.
• Encourage academic success and model appropriate balance between athletics and academics.
• Foster an inclusive team environment where all student-athletes feel valued and supported.
Game and Event Responsibilities
• Assist with coaching during contests and tournaments.
• Help with game preparation, equipment management, and post-game responsibilities.
• Support supervision of student-athletes during practices, competitions, and team travel.
• Ensure adherence to KSHSAA, AVCTL, and school rules and expectations.
Safety and Supervision
• Prioritize the health and safety of all student-athletes.
• Enforce appropriate safety procedures and proper use of equipment.
• Report injuries or concerns according to school policies.
• Maintain appropriate supervision before, during, and after practices and contests.
Communication and Collaboration
• Maintain positive and appropriate communication with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, students, parents, and school personnel.
• Support the school's expectations for professionalism and respectful conduct.
• Attend coaches' meetings, professional development opportunities, and required school events as requested.
Program Support
• Assist with inventory, care, and organization of athletic equipment and facilities.
• Help promote the athletic program in a positive and professional manner.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
Qualifications
• Previous coaching experience or participation in the sport preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with middle and high school students.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to teaching sportsmanship, integrity, and personal growth.
• Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, faculty, administrators, and families.
• Current CPR, First Aid, and any required state or league certifications (or willingness to obtain).
Physical Requirements
• Ability to demonstrate athletic skills and drills as appropriate.
• Ability to stand, walk, run, and remain active for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and carry athletic equipment up to 50 pounds.
