About this role

Bring the Comfort of Conversation and Connection

Sometimes, there is nothing quite like being able to chat, laugh and share memories in the language that feels most familiar.

We’re looking for a warm and caring Afrikaans-speaking volunteer to spend time with one of our Afrikaans-speaking residents and bring a little extra companionship to her week.

Your visits might include enjoying a cup of tea or strolling through the garden, and chatting in Afrikaans about places you have both visited or lived in, her life or simply enjoying chatting and companionship.

For an older person, having someone who can speak their language and take a genuine interest in their stories can bring a wonderful sense of comfort, belonging and connection.

You don’t need any special experience. We’re simply looking for someone who is kind, patient, a good listener and genuinely enjoys spending time with older people.

If you speak Afrikaans and would enjoy forming a meaningful connection with an older member of our community, we’d love to hear from you.

Your impact

Volunteering as a social visitor
can be a rewarding experience, both for the person you visit as well as
yourself. Regular visits from volunteers can help to improve quality of life
and help people feel less isolated.
