The project:    In the energy sector, the UK will need to invest up to £900 billion of capital expenditure to enable a net zero economy by 2050. For our clients in the sector, this means delivering complex projects and programmes delivering low-carbon technologies and infrastructure. And doing so safely, efficiently, and at pace.

Decarbonisation of energy is currently constrained by the capacity of, and connection to, the electricity network. This role will be at the forefront of this, contributing to the delivery of construction projects increasing capacity on the network, and connecting new generation and storage into the grid. Working closely with client and contractor teams, you will manage and drive project controls activities on major projects and programmes. This may include the set-up of project controls functions, delivery of day-to-day services, and continuous improvement of existing operations to enable greater productivity and performance across the portfolio.

You’ll be responsible for:

- Engaging with key stakeholders to establish timelines for production of quality assured and cost loaded, out turned deliverable programmes for sanction, that meet the capital plan year on year.
- Supporting the contracts team specialists to consistently evaluate tender returns within procurement guidelines and demonstrate that the contractor has understood its obligation to provide the works.
- Owning all aspects of the planning process from the integrated programme, the critical paths, scenario mapping, national grid programmes and the contractor programmes.
- Supporting the Project Manager during delivery to certify that all subsequent contractor programmes are compliant to the NEC and works information.
- Ensuring compliance with cost loading of programmes, as applicable, in line with the latest WBS structure and appropriate level cost capture and earned value to enable unit cost reporting.
- Providing monthly contractor programme analysis and feedback to Project Manager including update on run rates, schedule risks and mitigation measures/opportunities.
- Consistently applying all planning, cost loading and earned value principles in line with National Grid agreed processes to enable consistent and accurate data capture and reporting.
- Maintaining a consistent project baseline to measure performance. Carrying out impact assessments of early warnings or change events either from our supply chain or Project Manager.
- Assessing and validating supply chain progress during design and attending site during delivery to confirm construction progress.
- Supporting the delivery teams with Ofgem re-openers and/or regulatory reporting.
- Representing National Grid whilst engaging with contractor planning resource to complete month end reporting routines and liaising with stakeholders to raise exceptions early to enable corrective actions, as well as share good practices.
- Continuously reviewing and improving processes by raising innovative solutions to drive value and establish best practice planning and control.

You’ll need to have:

- Membership of APM, RICS, CIOB, ICE, AACE, IRM, IEMA or equivalent demonstrable professional or personal development.
- Extensive experience in the successful planning of projects and programmes in the utilities sector.
- Deep property or infrastructure project management expertise.
- Strong commercial and financial acumen.
- Leadership and management experience of large, diverse teams.
- Experience of managing relationships with key senior stakeholders.
- Knowledge of how carbon and sustainability considerations will shape the outlook of the projects you are working on.
