Job Title: Traveling Construction Superintendent Job Description
The Traveling Construction Superintendent oversees day-to-day field operations for commercial construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, and in accordance with plans, specifications, and quality standards. This role supports the Project Manager, coordinates subcontractors and site activities, and travels extensively to manage ground-up construction, additions, interior remodels, and design-build projects across various locations.
Responsibilities
- Provide clear and consistent communication with the project team, subcontractors, and stakeholders throughout all phases of construction.
- Assist the Project Manager with developing, updating, and maintaining detailed project schedules.
- Review and thoroughly understand project plans, specifications, local building codes, and inspection requirements before and during construction.
- Set up and maintain field offices, temporary services, site communications, and waste removal systems for each project.
- Coordinate daily construction activities to keep work on schedule and ensure adherence to project drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve field issues promptly as they arise to minimize delays and rework.
- Schedule and coordinate subcontractors, material deliveries, and on-site activities to maintain efficient workflow.
- Monitor workmanship on site to ensure all work meets established project quality and performance standards.
- Understand the scope, requirements, and responsibilities outlined in all subcontractor agreements.
- Lead daily and weekly coordination meetings with subcontractors and other stakeholders as needed to align on priorities and resolve conflicts.
- Ensure materials and equipment are ordered, delivered on time, and received in good condition.
- Collaborate with the owner, owners representative, architect, subcontractors, and Project Manager to resolve project conflicts and issues.
- Maintain accurate daily logs, progress photos, weekly reports, and all required project documentation.
- Establish and maintain project benchmarks, reference points, and layout controls as needed.
- Attend project meetings as required to support successful, timely project completion.
- Communicate, implement, and enforce company safety policies and procedures on the job site.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized job site and coordinate all required inspections with appropriate authorities.
- Develop, track, and complete punch list items to achieve final project acceptance.
- Assist with field office demobilization and project closeout activities, including documentation and turnover.
Essential Skills
- Experience as a superintendent or in construction supervision, specifically with commercial ground-up construction, additions, interior remodels, and design-build projects.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly convey information to project teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
- Strong technical skills and understanding of construction methods, sequencing, and industry best practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word for communication, documentation, and reporting.
- Experience using document management systems to organize and maintain project records.
- Knowledge of construction safety procedures, regulations, and building codes.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively, including nationwide travel as required.
- Ability to coordinate multiple subcontractors, manage competing priorities, and maintain project schedules.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Buildertrend or similar construction management software is a plus.
- Experience with commercial projects of varying types, with commercial construction as the primary focus.
- Experience with design-build delivery methods is preferred.
- Openness to nationwide travel is a plus.
Work Environment
This role is field-based with extensive travel and requires working on active commercial construction sites. The schedule is typically Monday to Friday, with flexibility required to meet project demands. The position involves 100% travel, often to different regions across the country, to oversee ground-up construction, additions, interior renovations, and design-build projects. The work environment includes field offices, temporary site services, and regular interaction with owners, architects, subcontractors, and project teams. Safety is a core focus, with strict adherence to safety procedures, regulations, and company policies. Standard business attire is expected in meetings, while appropriate construction site attire and personal protective equipment are required on job sites.

This is a Contract position based out of Crystal Lake, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $57.70/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
