Job Title: Clinical Veterinarian Job Description The Clinical Veterinarian oversees the health and welfare of animals within a research facility, diagnosing and treating medical conditions, diseases, and injuries while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and best practices. This role actively contributes to animal care programs, supports research activities, participates in the Animal Care Committee, and may perform advanced study procedures and develop new techniques to refine and improve existing protocols. Responsibilities
- Review and continuously improve animal health and welfare programs to ensure they reflect current veterinary medical, surgical, and laboratory animal best practices.
- Maintain and develop facility veterinary procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to animal health and care.
- Oversee the rodent clinical health monitoring and health quality assurance program, including ongoing monitoring of microbiological status of colonies and housing environments.
- Manage ongoing clinical health monitoring and healthcare programs for dog and cat colonies, including routine health measures such as anthelmintic programs and environmental programs for disease prevention.
- Oversee all facility-specific SOPs and guidelines for animal care and use, including authorship, review, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in emergency animal care on a rotating basis, including after-hours, weekend, and holiday coverage.
- Ensure animal facility operations, infrastructure, environmental parameters, and animal care programs remain compliant with CCAC and OMAFA Animals for Research Act regulations and guidelines.
- Assist with regulatory assessments and prepare animal health and welfare documentation for assessment and inspection purposes.
- Provide veterinary oversight that may include acting as Qualified Person in Charge (QPIC) or Alternate Qualified Person in Charge (AQPIC) for controlled drugs.
- Participate in research studies when veterinary-specific input is required, including performing physical examinations, surgical interventions, and other high-level study procedures.
- Investigate and develop methodologies that refine and improve animal welfare in existing protocols, such as techniques for indwelling catheter implantation to facilitate serial sample collection.
- Deliver lunch-and-learn sessions and targeted training and teaching sessions for staff on animal health, welfare, and procedures.
- Contribute to the continued development and refinement of staff training programs related to animal care, veterinary procedures, and research protocols.
- Assist investigators with animal protocol development, including authorship, review, and proofreading of animal use protocols.
- Provide technical support for animal-related procedures and veterinary medical issues to research and operational teams.
- Support the growth of clinical practices and clinical research within the facility by providing veterinary expertise and guidance.
- Serve as an active member of the Animal Care Committee, contributing veterinary insight to animal care and use oversight.
- Perform high-level study procedures as needed and contribute to the development and validation of new techniques that enhance research quality and animal welfare.
- Carry out other related duties as assigned to support the overall animal care and research program.
Essential Skills
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent veterinary qualification.
- Strong understanding of clinical development, including veterinary oversight in research environments.
- Hands-on experience in animal research and animal husbandry within a regulated setting.
- Knowledge of the basic principles of biology, immunology, and chemistry as they relate to animal health and research.
- Knowledge of the principles of safe handling of potentially pathogenic substances and contaminated materials.
- Familiarity with OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
- Knowledge of CCAC guidelines and policies and the Animals for Research Act.
- Knowledge of CCAC and OMAFA regulations and guidelines related to animal care and use.
- Ability to diagnose and treat medical conditions, diseases, and injuries in research animals across multiple species.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for protocol development, documentation, and staff training.
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation for emergency and after-hours care.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience developing, implementing, and updating veterinary SOPs and animal welfare programs.
- Experience providing veterinary input on study design, physical examinations, and surgical interventions in a research setting.
- Experience developing and delivering staff training programs and educational sessions such as lunch-and-learn events.
- Experience serving on or supporting an Animal Care Committee or similar oversight body.
- Ability to act as Qualified Person in Charge (QPIC) or Alternate Qualified Person in Charge (AQPIC) for controlled drugs, where applicable.
- Demonstrated ability to investigate and implement welfare refinements, including new techniques such as indwelling catheter implantation.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple programs, regulatory requirements, and research activities simultaneously.
- Commitment to supporting the growth of clinical practices and clinical research through collaborative work with multidisciplinary teams.
Work Environment This role is primarily on-site, with an expectation to be physically present at the facility four days per week, with potential flexibility for one day of remote work depending on operational needs. The position includes participation in an on-call rotation for weekend coverage approximately once every three weeks, as well as after-hours and holiday emergency support as needed. The environment is a regulated research facility that operates under CCAC, OMAFA, and OECD GLP principles, with established SOPs for animal care, health monitoring, and safety. Work involves close interaction with laboratory animals, clinical and research staff, and regulatory frameworks, requiring adherence to facility procedures, biosafety practices, and professional standards of conduct
Job Type & Location
This is a Permanent position based out of Centre Wellington, Ontario.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $140000.00 - $150000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
