## Project Overview:

Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.

This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come.

This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810 (Part 810), which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.

## Job Summary:

The Environmental Specialist delivers the project's environmental program at the workface, spending the working day in the construction areas rather than at a desk. The role walks the job, checks that environmental controls are in place and working, carries out inspections

and monitoring, supports subcontractors in getting their controls right, and records the evidence the project needs to demonstrate compliance with its permits and decision conditions. It is a hands-on field position for a developing professional who will grow into broader environmental responsibility under the guidance of the Field Environmental Manager.

## Major Responsibilities:

- Carries out daily environmental walkdowns and inspections of the construction areas, identifying deficiencies at the point of work, raising them with the responsible supervision on the spot, and confirming that corrections have actually been made.
- Checks that field environmental controls are installed, maintained and effective - erosion and sediment control, dewatering and discharge points, dust suppression, noise controls, wheel washes, waste segregation areas, fuel and chemical storage and secondary containment, spill kits and refueling arrangements.
- Conducts and coordinates environmental monitoring in the field - dust, noise, vibration, surface and groundwater, discharge sampling - arranges access for monitoring contractors, checks that results are received, and escalates exceedances promptly.
- Tracks permit and decision conditions applicable to live construction activities, verifies in the field that each is being met, and assembles the records, photographs and monitoring data that evidence compliance for regulatory and customer reporting.
- Reviews subcontractor method statements and environmental submittals for the activities in the assigned area, confirms that the mitigation measures they describe are practical, and then verifies in the field that what was written down is what has been put in place.
- Manages site waste in practice - checking segregation at source, storage conditions, licensed carrier and disposal documentation, and waste transfer records - and follows up where the arrangements on the ground do not match the waste management plan.
- Watches for ecological and heritage constraints in the working areas - protected species, nesting periods, tree and habitat protection zones, archaeological finds - halts work and escalates immediately where a constraint is at risk of being breached.
- Responds to spills and other environmental incidents in the field, supports containment and clean-up, gathers the facts first-hand, and contributes to investigation and corrective action so the same condition does not recur.
- Delivers environmental content in toolbox talks, inductions and pre-job briefings, and coaches crews and supervision on why a control matters rather than simply reporting that it is missing.
- Supports environmental audits and customer or regulatory authority site visits, accompanies inspectors in the field, and closes out the observations assigned to the area.
- Maintains accurate field records - inspection reports, monitoring logs, waste documentation, non-conformances and corrective actions - and provides the data used in weekly and monthly environmental performance reporting.

## Education and Experience Requirements:

- Requires a Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) related to environmental sciences, field biology, or natural resources with 1-2 years of relevant experience or 5-6 years of relevant work experience.
- Experience of environmental compliance on large infrastructure, energy or industrial construction projects working with multiple subcontractors is essential. Experience on a nuclear or comparably regulated project, and familiarity with the Polish permitting regime, are advantages rather than requirements; the project will support a candidate who brings strong construction environmental capability into that framework.

## Required Knowledge and Skills:

- Practical knowledge of construction environmental controls and when each is needed: erosion and sediment control, dewatering treatment, dust and noise management, waste segregation, spill prevention and containment.
- Competent in planning and conducting field inspections and environmental monitoring, and in interpreting monitoring results well enough to know when a reading matters.
- Working knowledge of ISO 14001 and of environmental permitting, waste and discharge regimes applicable to major construction works; familiarity with Polish environmental law and European Union directives is an advantage.
- Confident raising an issue directly with construction supervision and subcontractor staff, and persistent enough to see a correction through to closure.
- Strong attention to detail in record keeping - the project's compliance case rests on the quality of field evidence gathered day to day.
- Strong written and spoken English for reporting; Polish language ability is a significant advantage for engaging the workforce, subcontractors and local authorities.
- Proficient in MS Office; experience with GIS, mapping or environmental data management tools is preferable.
